Gmail Users in the US Can Now Change Their Email Addresses
Google has announced that users in the United States can now modify the part of their Gmail address that appears before "@gmail.com." This feature, which began rolling out on Tuesday, aims to provide an option for those dissatisfied with their current usernames. As per reports from TechCrunch, this change is significant for individuals who wish to replace old or embarrassing email addresses without losing access to their existing data.
Once users change their username, their previous email address will remain associated with their accounts as an 'alternate' address. This ensures that any emails sent to the old address will still reach their inboxes. Users are advised to carefully choose their new usernames as they can make this change only once every 12 months. Additionally, those who change their email cannot use the new username for any separate Google Account in the future.
To execute the change, users must navigate through their Google Account settings, tapping on the options under Personal info and selecting the email change feature. Google's support pages indicate that while the feature is rolling out gradually, all users in the US should eventually have access to it.
This development can also serve those who have undergone name changes, allowing them to update their email to reflect their current identity. However, it is crucial that users remember to update their email addresses in any external applications or websites where their Gmail is used for login.
Tech experts highlight that this long-awaited feature addresses a common frustration among Gmail users. Google previously hinted at this capability becoming available last year, initially rolling out in selected regions. The decision to extend it to a larger user base underscores the company's commitment to improving user experience within its services.
As this feature becomes accessible, many anticipate its impact on social connectivity and personal branding in the digital world. With users now able to fine-tune their email identities, it opens discussions about digital representation and the importance of username choices in the age of online presence.
