G7 Summit 2026: Leaders Discuss Global Solidarity and Sanctions
The 2026 G7 summit commenced on June 16 in Evian-les-Bains, France, gathering leaders from the Group of Seven industrialised nations, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India and U.S. President Donald Trump. This marked an important in-person meeting as Modi and Trump met for the first time in approximately 18 months.
Coinciding with ongoing geopolitical tensions, discussions at the summit focused on the protracted conflict in Ukraine, with leaders agreeing to exert intensified pressure on Russia. Donald Trump asserted that the United States is poised to reimpose sanctions on Russian oil, seeking to strengthen economic pressure on Moscow due to its invasion of Ukraine.
Prime Minister Modi, during a social media post, expressed his views at the outreach session on building new partnerships rooted in solidarity and equality, emphasising the significance of interconnectedness in today’s world.
The summit also addressed pressing health emergencies, notably the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with G7 leaders calling for a coordinated response amidst declarations from the Red Cross about the epidemic's potential growth.
On the sidelines of the summit, Modi met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, where they explored opportunities for enhanced cooperation focusing on trade, energy, and educational exchanges.
In a comprehensive statement, G7 leaders committed to tackling rising global debt vulnerabilities that threaten economic stability. They highlighted the necessity for multilateral development banks to adopt risk-sharing measures, aiming to provide targeted support for countries burdened by unsustainable debt yet eager for reform.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy participated remotely, reiterating the consensus among G7 leaders that Russia is not winning the war in Ukraine. He mentioned ongoing discussions regarding further sanctions aimed at compelling Moscow towards negotiations. He warned of a challenging winter ahead for Russia if a peace agreement is not reached soon.
During his discussions, Trump reiterated the U.S. position to allow waivers for Russian oil to expire following a recent deal regarding Iran. He conveyed optimism regarding the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz after concluding negotiations designed to halt the war in Iran.
Mark Carney announced new Canadian sanctions against various Russian entities, aiming to target exports and financial resources used in the conflict.
The summit, running from June 15 to June 17, provides a platform for discussion on critical global issues, with leaders striving to forge more robust strategies for economic and health-related challenges worldwide.
