Fresh Snowfall and Rains Impact Transport in Kashmir Valley
Higher reaches of Kashmir experience fresh snowfall while rains lash the plains, disrupting travel routes and prompting weather advisories.

Fresh snowfall in the higher elevations of Kashmir has resulted in the closure of key national highways, as reported by the region's meteorological department. The affected routes include the Srinagar-Leh National Highway and the Bandipora-Gurez road, which closed due to adverse weather conditions.

On Sunday, significant snowfall was recorded in various areas, including popular tourist destinations like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Yousmarg, Gurez, Razdan Top, and the Sonamarg-Zojila Axis. This snowfall was attributed to an incoming western disturbance impacting the region.

In the plains of the valley, including Srinagar city, moderate rains were reported, characterised by intermittent downpours throughout the day. These conditions led to a rise in minimum temperatures across the region, with Srinagar recording a low of 10.3 degrees Celsius, significantly above the seasonal average by 3.8 degrees.

The night temperatures throughout the valley were also observed to be three to five degrees higher than usual. Meteorological forecasts suggest that light to moderate rain in the lowlands and additional snowfall in the higher reaches may continue into Monday night, accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour.

The Met department also indicated that further moderate snowfall could occur in some elevated areas of north and central Kashmir. Looking ahead, the weather is predicted to remain cloudy on March 31, with the potential for brief spells of light rain or snow in scattered areas. From April 1 through 2, the forecasts predict isolated light rainfall.

Additionally, periods of light rain and snow are expected from April 3 to 7. In light of these forecasts, the meteorological department has advised farmers in the region to pause farming activities until conditions improve. The persistent adverse weather has raised safety concerns, and travel on the affected highways remains precarious. Authorities are working to monitor the situation and facilitate safe passage for vehicles once conditions allow.
