France Faces First Major Power Outage Amid Record Heatwave
Extreme heat causes outage affecting 68,000 homes in France's northwestern region, as temperatures soar due to changing weather patterns.

As a record-breaking heatwave continues to affect large parts of France, approximately 68,000 homes experienced a significant power outage in northwestern France on June 24, 2026. Local authorities reported that this incident marks the first major disruption in electricity supply during the current episode of extreme weather.

The outage, linked to a transformer failure in the energy grid, occurred around 9 p.m. local time on Tuesday, June 23, in the commune of Ergue-Gaberic, situated near Quimper in Brittany. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported due to the power disruptions.

According to the prefecture in the coastal department of Finistere, emergency teams from French grid operators RTE and Enedis worked through the night to address the issues. However, full restoration of power is not anticipated until the end of the day at the earliest. At the peak of the outage on Tuesday evening, over 106,000 customers were reported to be without electricity.

RTE indicated that due to technical reasons, it was unlikely that affected households would be reconnected before the end of Wednesday, June 24. The extreme heat has placed Finistere under a red alert, one of 58 French departments experiencing temperatures between 39°C to 41°C.

Experts attribute the current heat phenomenon to atmospheric patterns that trap hot air for prolonged periods, exacerbated by global warming. The historical heat levels have prompted health warnings and calls for citizens to remain vigilant as temperatures soar across multiple regions in France.

“Extreme weather events like this are becoming increasingly common due to climate change,” said meteorologists, underscoring the need for preparedness in light of future weather challenges.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and advise individuals in affected areas to take appropriate measures to stay safe during this ongoing heatwave. Updates regarding power restoration will be provided as teams work diligently to resolve the situation.
