Over 100 flights were cancelled at Delhi's airport as dense fog reduced visibility, affecting travel plans across Northern India.

NEW DELHI: More than 100 flights were cancelled on Saturday at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi due to severe fog conditions that diminished visibility significantly across Northern India. According to officials, there were 66 cancellations for incoming flights and 63 for outgoing flights.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) issued a passenger advisory in response to the adverse weather, urging travellers to check with their airlines for the most current flight information. The AAI also highlighted that the reduced visibility could lead to delays and disruptions in flight operations at several airports throughout the region.

In a message posted on X, the AAI stated, ‘Reduced visibility due to fog across parts of Northern India may impact flight operations at select airports, leading to possible delays or disruptions. Passengers are encouraged to stay in regular contact with their respective airlines for real-time flight updates and rely exclusively on official communication channels for accurate information.’

To assist passengers during this challenging time, the AAI has deployed dedicated teams at the airport to provide support. The authority expressed appreciation for the public's patience and cooperation as they endeavoured to maintain safe and efficient operations.

IndiGo Airlines also issued a travel advisory, informing passengers of potential delays and cancellations, particularly at Ranchi, Jammu, and Hindon airports. The airline reassured travellers that it was closely monitoring the weather situation and encouraged them to stay informed about their flight statuses. ‘Low visibility and fog over Ranchi, Jammu, and Hindon airports may impact flight schedules,’ the advisory noted. ‘We are monitoring the situation closely and doing our best to ensure safe and smooth travel.’

In addition to the cancellations, low visibility at Jaisalmer Airport has similarly disrupted flight operations, although the airport is adhering to passenger facilitation norms to enhance safety and convenience. While some flights continued to operate, delays were anticipated.

As visibility issues persisted, the air quality in Delhi also worsened. The overall Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 384 by 8 AM, categorising it as 'very poor', according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). This marked a decline from Friday's AQI of 374 recorded in the afternoon, as a thick layer of smog enveloped the city, causing discomfort among residents.

The weather conditions have prompted authorities to take necessary measures to assist travellers. Passengers are advised to remain alert and to utilise official channels for updates regarding their travel plans.
