Fifa President Gianni Infantino Faces Growing Dissent Within Organisation

The position of Fifa president Gianni Infantino has come under increasing scrutiny following significant criticism from within the organisation. Kevin Lamour, Fifa's chief operating officer, released a statement regarding the controversial proposal to sell stakes in international competitions to private investors, asserting that it is primarily the product of one individual’s ambitions.

Lamour declared that the time had arrived for football's political leaders to engage in critical reflection and make effective decisions. He emphasised that the Fifa administration felt misled regarding the initiative. The statement, which did not name Infantino directly, coincided with a wave of dissent, including a third football confederation voicing opposition and the resignation of a senior advisor to Infantino.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has also voiced his concerns, stating that Infantino is "the wrong man" to lead Fifa. His comments highlight the stakes at play in the governance of international football. During a recent event, US President Donald Trump addressed the proposals but confirmed he had not yet discussed them with Infantino, despite their prior rapport.

In his statement, Lamour reaffirmed the integrity of Fifa's mission, which he described as serving the needs of football. He argued for a leader who can unify the community rather than cause divisions. "If that means I lose my job, then so be it," Lamour stated, reflecting the seriousness with which internal critics view Infantino's plans.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has expressed solidarity with its European and North American counterparts, arguing that Infantino's proposals cannot secure the necessary consensus for implementation. The AFC highlighted the World Cup's strength lies in its worldwide unity and participation of all member federations.

Carlos Cordeiro, Infantino's senior adviser on global strategy and governance, resigned in protest against the plans, stating that they would harm the future of football. Cordeiro described the proposals as a "bad deal for football" and suggested they risked destroying the sport's values.

Burnham labelled Infantino's proposal as an "outrageous suggestion", reaffirming his belief that it underscores Infantino's unsuitability for leadership of the organisation. With the AFC and multiple confederations poised against the plan, Infantino's attempt to gain backing within Fifa appears increasingly tenuous.

According to reports, Infantino's proposed restructuring includes establishing a commercial subsidiary to manage Fifa's core events, which would invite external minority investments through a new entity known as Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE). Although the development seeks to enhance financial returns for member associations, it has raised concerns about potential threats to the integrity of Fifa competitions.

Fifa aims to gain a straightforward majority vote from its members—specifically 106 of the 211 associations—for the initiative to proceed. With numerous associations already publicised as opposed to the plans, the path to approval may prove challenging.

The proposal, outlined in a document developed by investment bank JP Morgan, suggests expanding Fifa's global tournaments and claims that they are currently "under-monetised". However, the document notably omits any mention of the women's game, drawing further criticism regarding inclusivity within the sport.

Should the proposal be accepted, Thrive Eternal, an American investment firm, is expected to lead the investor consortium. Lamour, who joined Fifa in November 2024 from Uefa, expressed his concerns about the ongoing situation, indicating that the current conditions inhibit the organisation's ability to perform effectively.

Cordeiro's departure marks a significant moment for Fifa, as he is the highest-ranking official to resign amidst the backlash against Infantino's ongoing leadership. His tenure included influential roles, such as participation in the White House taskforce for the 2026 World Cup, providing insight not only into Fifa’s strategies but also into the complexities of its governance.

As Fifa prepares for potential votes on these pivotal proposals, the current discord raises questions about the future direction of the organisation and the leadership that will guide it into the next decade.
