A tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening at a factory within Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar, where an explosion resulted in the deaths of 13 people. Officials report that among the deceased, 12 individuals were Indian nationals. The Indian Embassy in Doha confirmed the fatalities through a post on X, expressing deep sorrow over the incident and assuring that assistance is being provided to affected families.

The Qatari Energy Minister, Saad bin Shreida Al-Kaabi, confirmed that the victims included both Indian and Pakistani nationals. Following the explosion, authorities indicated that 66 other individuals sustained injuries, although they are reported to be in stable condition and receiving medical treatment.

The Indian Embassy has stated it is maintaining close communication with local authorities to ensure that the mortal remains of those who passed away are returned to India as quickly as possible. The embassy also expressed solidarity with the families affected during this difficult time and extended well wishes for a swift recovery to the injured.

In a statement from the Qatari Ministry of Interior, it was revealed that the explosion stemmed from a “technical malfunction” during operations at the Barzan local gas supply facility. The ministry emphasised that no leaks occurred as a result of the incident, indicating that there is no ongoing threat to public safety or the surrounding environment.

Emergency response teams promptly arrived at the site, adhering to approved emergency protocols. Authorities have since completed search and response operations at the location and are conducting an investigation into the exact causes of the explosion.

The Indian Embassy reiterated its commitment to support the families of the victims and to assist the injured, drawing on their resources and networks to offer necessary assistance in Qatar.
