Escalation in Middle East: US Conducts Strikes in Iran
US military intensifies strikes in Iran amid rising tensions, causing power outages and casualties while affecting global energy security.

Tensions have escalated in the Middle East as the United States has launched a series of air strikes in Iran, marking the sixth consecutive night of military operations. Iranian officials have reported significant damage to civilian infrastructure, including power outages and attacks on travel hubs in Bandar Abbas. This intensifying conflict raises concerns over regional stability and global energy security.

On Thursday morning, the US military confirmed it had disabled an unladen oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz using Hellfire missiles, further tightening its blockade on Iranian ports. The attack on the tanker occurred after the vessel failed to heed multiple warnings as it approached Kharg Island.

In a statement, the Central Command of the US military mentioned a focus on Iranian military capabilities that threaten international shipping in this vital waterway. The air strikes have reportedly injured hundreds of people and resulted in several fatalities, with the death toll rising to over 35, including civilians, according to Iranian sources.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has warned that global energy security remains at risk, emphasising the need for increased oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Fatih Birol, the executive director of the IEA, stated, “Oil security is still a critical issue. We should be worried if the situation does not improve in the next few weeks.” Before hostilities commenced, about one-fifth of the world's energy shipments passed through this crucial maritime corridor.

Iran’s military has responded with attacks targeting bases in Bahrain and Kuwait, although immediate reports on damage or casualties have yet to emerge. Iranian media indicate continued strikes on various locations, including the capital city, Tehran, and coastal defence structures. Local authorities reported injuries and fatalities resulting from US operations in regions near the Strait of Hormuz.

Moreover, Colombian President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella announced plans to re-establish an embassy in Jerusalem, seeking to deepen ties with Israel—a stark shift from the previous administration’s stance. The geopolitical implications of these developments in the context of the ongoing conflict remain to be seen.

Meanwhile, the situation in Qatar has calmed, with the Ministry of Interior confirming that a recent security threat had been resolved. Officials advised the public to adhere to safety protocols while maintaining vigilance.

As military operations continue, Iran's army has claimed to have targeted US helicopters and reconnaissance aircraft at Sakhir airbase in Bahrain. Increased military engagement has prompted fears of a potential return to full-scale war, especially as both sides appear to be sustaining strikes without immediate negotiations to de-escalate.

Reports indicate that the situation remains fluid, with updates on US operations expected in the coming hours. Analysts continue to monitor the ramifications of these military actions on regional stability and the global oil market, as tensions seem unlikely to abate soon.
