Escalating Houthi Attacks Claim Lives in Yemen's Marib Region

Tensions in Yemen have intensified following a series of missile attacks attributed to Iran-backed Houthi forces targeting Yemeni government military sites. On Thursday, at least 30 soldiers were reported dead in strikes directed at the provinces of Hadramout and Marib. The assaults have raised alarms amid a backdrop of increased violence in the Yemeni civil war, which has led to hundreds of thousands of casualties since its inception in 2014.

Houthi forces launched a minimum of 12 missile assaults on Friday, following earlier strikes on Thursday that killed Yemeni government soldiers. The missiles were launched from al-Jawf governorate, specifically aiming at military installations in al-Thiniya and al-Abr in Hadramout as well as al-Rouk in Marib.

According to Yemeni government sources, the missiles hit several military formation camps at around 2pm local time on Thursday. Many troops had gathered for morning training exercises, resulting in a higher number of casualties than usual.

The Homeland Shield Forces, which were established in 2022 with Saudi support, protect the Marib-Hadramout border and comprise tens of thousands of personnel. The Emergency Forces, set up in late 2025 to guard land borders and anti-Houthi fronts, were directly impacted by the Houthi strikes.

On Friday, Yemen's State Television reported that air defences thwarted further Houthi drone incursions above Marib. The Houthis have indicated that their missile campaign will persist, labelling the Yemeni government as a Saudi proxy.

A senior Saudi official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, informed Reuters that intelligence cautioned of potential further Houthi assaults under the guidance of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The official alleged that the attacks may extend to critical infrastructure, including energy facilities.

In a separate incident, a Houthi attack on Saudi Arabia's Najran province resulted in injuries to multiple civilians, including a child, showcasing the cross-border ramifications of the conflict.

The situation in Yemen represents a significant escalation in regional relations, especially following heightened military activity linked to the ongoing US-Israel war against Iran launched in late February. This ongoing war has been a catalyst for renewed hostilities in various parts of the Middle East.

The complexity of Yemen's situation has been exacerbated by interventions from Iran and Saudi Arabia. The Houthis, having gained control of Yemen's capital, Sanaa, have been in conflict with the Saudi-backed government based in the port city of Aden.

Moreover, the Houthis have committed to targeting maritime operations, causing concerns over global shipping, particularly in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a critical maritime route connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. Risks associated with this airspace have prompted Saudi Arabia to initiate a new international coalition aimed at safeguarding the Red Sea from Houthi threats.

As the conflict persists, analysts predict heightened human rights violations and humanitarian crises, further complicating the path to peace in a region already devastated by years of warfare.
