Eros International Files ₹84 Crore Lawsuit Against Director Over Film
Eros International Media Ltd has initiated legal proceedings in the Bombay High Court against filmmaker Aanand L Rai and his production entity, Colour Yellow Media Entertainment LLP. The lawsuit, filed on January 17, 2026, arises from allegations that the defendants have violated Eros's intellectual property rights. The company contends that 'Tere Ishk Mein', their upcoming film, has been promoted as a 'spiritual sequel' to the 2013 romantic drama 'Raanjhanaa' without obtaining the necessary permissions.
According to a report from The Times of India, the studio is seeking damages amounting to ₹84 crore (approximately £8.3 million) from Rai. Eros International claims that the marketing of 'Tere Ishk Mein' misappropriates the legacy of 'Raanjhanaa', a film that garnered significant acclaim and established a devoted fanbase.
The term 'spiritual sequel' is often used in the film industry to denote works that share themes, motifs, or character arcs, but are not direct continuations of a story. Eros argues that this classification creates an erroneous association with 'Raanjhanaa', potentially misleading audiences and harming the original film's reputation. This kind of legal action reflects a growing trend in the Indian cinema industry, where studios increasingly safeguard their intellectual properties amid a competitive landscape.
The outcome of this lawsuit could set a precedent for how future films are marketed and the definitions that surround sequels in Indian cinema. Legal experts suggest that the ruling may clarify the extent to which filmmakers can draw inspiration from successful predecessors without infringing on copyright.
A spokesperson for Eros International commented, "We are committed to protecting our intellectual property and will pursue legal channels to uphold our rights in this matter." Meanwhile, Aanand L Rai has yet to publicly respond to the lawsuit.
The film 'Raanjhanaa', known for its poignant storytelling and memorable performances, has become a cultural reference point within Indian cinema and retains a lasting impact on its audience, raising the stakes for any production that attempts to align itself with its narrative legacy.
