Indian Prime Minister Launches First Sleeper Vande Bharat Train
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the first sleeper Vande Bharat train, establishing a new link between the cities of Kolkata and Guwahati. The event took place in Kolkata, aiming to enhance the travel experiences for passengers in the region.
The sleeper variant of the Vande Bharat train is designed to offer more comfortable overnight journeys, appealing to both passengers and tourists. This new service is expected to facilitate better connectivity between West Bengal and Assam, thus promoting regional tourism and trade.
During the launch ceremony, Prime Minister Modi expressed his enthusiasm for the advancements in railway services across India, stating, "The introduction of this sleeper train is not just about convenience; it's about ensuring faster and safer journeys for our citizens."
The Vande Bharat trains, also known as Train 18, are part of an initiative to modernise the Indian Railways, aimed at improving efficiency and passenger comfort. The addition of sleeper facilities allows for extended travel timings, making it feasible for passengers to travel longer distances overnight.
The Indian Railways has been focusing on expanding its fleet of Vande Bharat trains, with an ambitious plan to introduce numerous such services across the country in the coming years. This move aligns with the government's broader objective of enhancing railway infrastructure and services as part of its commitment to sustainable transportation.
The Kolkata to Guwahati route, covering over 1,100 kilometres, is crucial for various economic activities, and the new sleeper service is expected to reduce travel time significantly compared to existing train services. The introduction of these trains forms part of a larger strategy to boost the tourism industry in both West Bengal and Assam, providing easier access to popular destinations.
As part of the launch, Prime Minister Modi also emphasised the potential economic benefits, as improved connectivity could stimulate trade and investment opportunities in the northeastern region of India.
While the new sleeper service has garnered excitement, officials of the Indian Railways are also working on ensuring adequate safety measures and training for staff to handle the expected increase in passenger numbers.
With this initiative, the Indian government reinforces its commitment to enhancing the quality of travel in the country, setting a benchmark for future railway projects.
