Eight US Navy Sailors Attempt Suicides During Deployment

Eight sailors from the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group have attempted suicide during their extended deployment in the Middle East. This information was revealed by Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao in a letter to Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York. The letter, sent on Tuesday, was in response to Senator Gillibrand's inquiries regarding the welfare of sailors on board amidst rising concerns over mental health issues.

The USS Abraham Lincoln has been deployed since November 2022 and is now on its way back to the United States after a long engagement in the region. Family members of the sailors had expressed worry about the deteriorating mental health conditions faced by their loved ones during this protracted mission.

In his correspondence, Secretary Cao reported that the eight individuals included crew members from the Lincoln as well as personnel from the carrier air wing, strike group, and other support units. To address mental health needs, he noted that there are five chaplains and various mental health professionals stationed on the vessel to assist the sailors.

While the Navy has acknowledged supply chain challenges, officials have stated that there is no ongoing mental health crisis aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, which accommodates about 5,000 sailors. The letter also addressed allegations of deteriorating living conditions, insisting that while some plumbing failures and minor food shortages were experienced, these were temporary and localized.

Senator Gillibrand has been vocal about her concerns, condemning what she labelled as previous dismissive responses from the Trump administration regarding crew conditions. In her statement to the BBC, she emphasised, "What Trump and Secretary Hegseth dismissed as 'fake news' turned out to be serious and deteriorating conditions for our service members. Our troops and their families make immense sacrifices every day, yet the president dismissed them with open disrespect."

The USS Abraham Lincoln's deployment originally slated to conclude in May was extended multiple times, following its initial assignment in the South China Sea. The USS George Washington was sent to replace Lincoln after it returned following a nine-month mission.

Upon their return journey, US sailors made a stop in Thailand, marking their first time on land in a significant while, where they visited local bars, malls, and beach areas before heading back to the United States.

Suicide has been identified as a leading cause of death within the US Navy and the Marine Corps. Research published in January indicated that sailors experience elevated levels of serious psychological distress relative to their peers in other military branches, citing factors such as inadequate living conditions, persistent noise, and demanding work schedules that limit downtime.
