Eight Fatalities in Nalanda Temple Stampede; Government Responds
A stampede at Shitala Mata Temple in Nalanda results in eight women's deaths, prompting Bihar government to announce ex-gratia payments.

Eight women have lost their lives and numerous others sustained injuries following a stampede during a religious event at the Shitala Mata Temple in Nalanda district, Bihar. The tragic incident unfolded as an overwhelming number of devotees gathered for worship, creating conditions of extreme overcrowding.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed his sorrow over the incident and has announced a total ex-gratia of ₹6 lakh for the families of the deceased. This amount comprises ₹4 lakh from the Disaster Management Department and ₹2 lakh from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. The Chief Minister described the event as "extremely tragic" and voiced his devastation over the loss of life.

Officials from the Bihar government have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the stampede. Eyewitnesses reported that the chaos was exacerbated by the volume of people attempting to access the temple at once, particularly on a Tuesday, which is traditionally considered auspicious for temple visits in the region. Many attendees attributed the disaster to mismanagement of the crowd.

Visuals from the scene depicted chaotic conditions amongst the throngs of devotees, prompting swift action from local police and emergency services. Assistant Superintendent of Police Noorul Haque confirmed the death toll, stating that prompt relief and rescue operations were initiated shortly after the incident was reported.

In light of the tragedy, additional administrative measures have been undertaken. The Bihar government directed the Chief Secretary to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those injured receive adequate medical care. District officials have been instructed to restore normalcy as quickly as possible. The Patna Commissioner has also been dispatched to oversee recovery efforts in Bihar Sharif.

President Droupadi Murmu was in Nalanda for an official visit at the time of the incident, which complicates the circumstances further, as local officials were engaged in preparations for her programme.

In response to the tragedy, the Prime Minister’s Office also conveyed its condolences, announcing an additional ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh for each family of the deceased and ₹50,000 for those injured. The Deputy Chief Minister, Samrat Choudhary, referred to the stampede as "extremely heartbreaking" and assured the public that the government would provide necessary support to the affected families.

Adding to the national sentiment, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh extended his sympathies to the victims' families and prayers for the quick recovery of the injured. This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding crowd management during religious events in India, where large gatherings are commonplace and can lead to tragic outcomes when not efficiently regulated.
