Ebola Outbreak: 263 Cases and 43 Fatalities in Congo and Uganda
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda are currently facing a significant Ebola outbreak, reporting a total of 263 confirmed cases and 43 fatalities as of May 30, 2026. This particular outbreak is attributed to the rare Bundibugyo strain of the virus, which is known for its high mortality rate and lack of approved vaccines or treatments. Jean Kaseya, the Director-General of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, revealed these statistics during an op-ed published in the Financial Times.
Health agencies are investigating over 1,100 suspected cases. There is an urgent need to activate national incident systems and enhance investments in pandemic preparedness, according to Kaseya. He emphasised the critical role of international partners, stating that their support must align with strategies developed by African institutions and governments to be effective.
The outbreak represents the 17th incident in the DRC and marks one of the largest since the discovery of Ebola. Health officials have expressed concern about a lack of essential supplies, including masks, which have hampered response efforts. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared this outbreak a public health emergency of international concern.
In a separate but related development, the WHO reported some positive news amid the crisis: five individuals infected with the Bundibugyo strain have shown improvement and are expected to be discharged from medical facilities soon. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced that four patients would leave the hospital shortly after a fifth had returned home earlier in the week.
While recovery is a cause for optimism, the outbreak's pace has alarmed health officials. Associated Medical charity, Doctors Without Borders, has described the situation as “deeply alarming,” noting that the Bundibugyo strain shows a rapid spread that has outstripped the global response efforts. Laura Gonzalez, the deputy director of operations for the charity, highlighted the challenges posed by limited testing capacity, stating, “Never before has an Ebola outbreak recorded so many cases so soon after its declaration.”
As the DRC struggles to contain the virus, it also grapples with public frustration over stringent health protocols and the presence of armed groups, which complicate relief efforts. The government is under pressure to address safety concerns while ensuring effective disease management as the outbreak continues to unfold. The need for robust healthcare infrastructure is critical as these nations work towards curtailing the spread of this deadly virus.
