A24's 'Backrooms' Achieves Historic $90 Million Opening Weekend
A24's 'Backrooms' debuts with $90 million, becoming the studio's highest-grossing opener, while 'Obsession' breaks records across weekends.

This past weekend marked a significant moment in box office history, with A24's film 'Backrooms' earning an astonishing $81 million in its opening weekend across 3,442 cinemas in North America. Directed by Kane Parsons, a 20-year-old filmmaker, this record-breaking performance has made 'Backrooms' the highest-grossing opening for A24 to date.

Kane Parsons, known for his viral YouTube short series, has become the youngest director ever to lead the domestic box office, surpassing the previous record held by Josh Trank, who was 27 when his film 'Chronicle' debuted in 2012. The film is centred around a failed architect portrayed by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who discovers an inexplicable series of rooms within the furniture store he manages.

In tandem with 'Backrooms', Focus Features' 'Obsession' has also made headlines, garnering $26.4 million in its third weekend. This thriller, produced for merely $750,000, has seen an unprecedented increase in ticket sales, becoming the first film outside of a holiday season since 1982’s 'E.T. The Extraterrestrial' to display growth in its subsequent weekends.

'Obsession' has now crossed the milestone of $100 million in domestic box office earnings and has amassed a global total of $148 million, solidifying its status as Focus' top-grossing film in North America.

Industry analysts have noted a significant shift in audience demographics, with approximately 85% of 'Backrooms' viewers being under the age of 35 and more than half of ticket buyers aged 25 or younger. Jeff Bock from Exhibitor Relations commented, “There’s a new audience, and they’re waiting for this kind of content.” Both films represent a fundamental change in the market, as they are produced by YouTubers and have attracted large millennial and Gen Z audiences.

Despite the massive success of 'Backrooms' and 'Obsession', Disney's latest 'Star Wars' spinoff, 'The Mandalorian and Grogu', faced a significant drop in ticket sales, with a reported 70% decline in its second weekend. The film, which holds the third position in weekend earnings, has earned $171 million globally, yet this decrease suggests potential challenges in appealing to a broader audience.

The wave of young filmmakers, including Parsons and Curry Barker, who directed 'Obsession', highlights an evolving landscape in the film industry where traditional production models are being upended. As small-budget, original content gains traction, the success of 'Backrooms' and 'Obsession' may herald a new era in filmmaking, potentially marking a departure from established franchises.

As the summer movie season continues, the dominance of original horror films raises intriguing questions about audience preferences and the future of blockbuster films. Upcoming releases will likely be watched closely by industry insiders, eager to see if this trend persists or signals a more substantial change in consumer behaviour.

In terms of new releases, Sony's comedy 'The Breadwinner' featuring Nate Bargatze is expected to finish in the top five, earning around $7.5 million during its opening weekend, while Focus' war drama 'Pressure' is projected to secure approximately $5.7 million. Moving forward, it remains to be seen how these dynamics will play out in the competitive landscape of cinema this summer.
