DRDO Officials Refute Claims of Cybersecurity Breach

Officials from the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) have dismissed media reports regarding a purported cybersecurity incident as "incorrect and unverified." They emphasised that there is currently no evidence to support claims of an ongoing cyber attack or unauthorised network intrusion.

Reports in various news outlets suggested that a data breach had occurred, with a supposed threat actor attempting to sell a significant quantity of data on the dark web. In response, the officials confirmed that a comprehensive investigation has been conducted by relevant agencies within the Ministry of Defence.

A senior official stated, "It is clarified that there is currently no evidence of any active cyber attack, unauthorised network intrusion, or ongoing data exfiltration."

The officials further claimed that most of the data allegedly leaked is of an unclassified nature and does not contain confidential information. They noted that certain unclassified data classified as "critical" stems from an earlier breach that took place between 2020 and 2022. According to them, threat actors had actively manipulated documents to make them appear as recent and confidential, thereby raising concerns unnecessarily.

All documents identified in the alleged data leak were described as outdated and having undergone multiple revisions. The officials maintain that these documents do not reflect current data or configurations relevant to the department and the ministry.

Further investigations indicated that multiple threat actors had been attempting to sell this supposedly leaked data. However, the officials stressed that the data being sold is largely repetitive across these actors and lacks any current significance to the DRDO or its operations.

The officials concluded that this alleged data leak appears to have been deliberately fabricated by the threat actors, likely motivated by financial gain. This has created unnecessary panic and speculation regarding the security of the organisation's information systems.
