Donald Trump Faces Skepticism on Iran Deal at G7 Summit

United States President Donald Trump is concluding discussions with leaders at the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, on June 17, 2026. He has been promoting a proposed agreement with Iran, aimed at ensuring that the Islamic Republic does not develop nuclear weapons. However, details regarding the implementation of this agreement remain vague, as neither the White House nor Iranian officials have released the text.

The G7 summit, which features prominent industrial nations, is also focused on future issues such as artificial intelligence and economic growth. Following the formal talks, Trump is scheduled to attend an elaborate dinner at the Palace of Versailles before returning to Washington.

Despite his optimistic claims about the Iran agreement, Trump encounters significant scepticism both domestically and internationally. Israel, a key ally, has expressed concerns about the terms of the arrangement, particularly given the ongoing military conflict involving its forces and Iran-backed Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.

Trump commented, “It’s a great document,” referring to the unshared memorandum, which is set to be signed in Switzerland on June 19, 2026. He stated that the core objective of the agreement is that Iran will not have the means to acquire or develop nuclear weapons.

Internally, some members of Trump's own party have raised questions about the adequacy of the deal, doubting whether it will effectively halt Iran's nuclear ambitions. Simultaneously, the international community is anxious to see how the agreement will impact oil transportation through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical channel for global oil supply.

The lack of clarity surrounding the agreement has led to mixed interpretations from U.S. and Iranian officials. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that Israel's military actions could breach the terms of the deal. He remarked that without the withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied territories, the war would not effectively conclude.

During a press conference, Trump acknowledged the tensions arising from Israel's actions against Hezbollah and expressed concern, saying, "It just goes on forever.” He noted the toll of Israeli military strikes, citing nearly 4,000 fatalities, including civilians, since the conflict escalated.

Later on June 17, Trump is expected to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This meeting comes amid a complex period in U.S.-India relations, compounded by recent incidents such as the deaths of three Indian sailors in a U.S. military operation in the Gulf of Oman. The Indian government has formally protested this military action.

While Trump and Modi previously enjoyed a warm rapport, recent developments, including tariff fluctuations and disruptions to energy supplies stemming from the Iran war, have complicated their relationship. India's concerns are also heightened by Trump's attempts to negotiate a trade agreement with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

In addition to Modi, Trump will also engage in talks with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi and other leaders at the summit, where discussions will focus on energy supply routes from the Gulf. Before hostilities, a significant portion of the world's oil and natural gas supply transited through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been intensely impacted by the current conflict.
