In a lengthy State of the Union address, Donald Trump promotes American achievements while facing low approval ratings and lacking significant policy changes.

On Tuesday evening, United States President Donald Trump delivered his latest State of the Union address, highlighting what he termed a significant turnaround for America. With midterm elections on the horizon, the president aimed to energise his supporters while attempting to address a populace that appears increasingly dissatisfied with his leadership. Trump’s speech was marked by its theatrical style and emotional appeals, reminiscent of his background in reality television.

Early in the address, he welcomed the US Olympic men's hockey team, showcasing their gold medals, which prompted a wave of patriotic cheers from the Republican audience. The president also recognized military heroes, including a centenarian World War II veteran who had received a Medal of Honour and a Coast Guard member who saved numerous lives during disastrous flooding in Texas.

With a runtime of 107 minutes, the address was notably the longest in history, filled with rhetoric designed to bolster national pride and convey a sense of accomplishment. Trump opened by declaring, "Our nation is back," drawing attention to economic indicators like rising incomes and lower petrol prices, while attributing the nation's problems to Democrats, particularly in regard to affordability issues. Nonetheless, public approval for his administration hovers around 40 percent, reflecting growing discontent among Americans who desire more tangible solutions to pressing issues.

Days earlier, the president had similarly discussed the state of the nation in a national address, but it failed to resonate significantly with the public. Trump’s advisers appeared to be banking on the larger audience offered by the State of the Union format. However, few groundbreaking policy initiatives emerged in his latest speech. Instead, he briefly proposed ideas such as new retirement accounts for working-class citizens and engaging artificial intelligence companies in discussions to ensure sufficient electricity supply for their operations.

He reiterated previously presented policies, including healthcare plans aimed at assisting Americans with insurance premiums, voter citizenship verification laws, and restrictions on commercial driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants. Trump expressed his determination to uphold the existing tariff regime despite a recent Supreme Court ruling that invalidated many of these duties. Demonstrating the contentious atmosphere of the address, reactions from legislators were mixed; Republicans cheered, while Democrats remained largely silent or expressed their dissent.

The immigration debate became particularly heated, with Trump characterising undocumented immigrants as a significant threat, a narrative that has been politically beneficial for him in the past. However, following a controversial enforcement operation that resulted in the deaths of two American citizens in Minneapolis, this topic has become more complex for his administration.

The president did not acknowledge these tragic incidents or the potential for a less aggressive enforcement stance that he had previously suggested. Instead, he employed rhetoric that sought to emphasise the dangers posed by 'illegal aliens,' sparking mixed reactions from audience members.

As Trump’s administration approaches the midterms, the question remains whether the recent address will aid in altering the political landscape or bolster support as the nation nears its 250th anniversary. With a backdrop of military honour and athletic accolades, Trump appeared to wager his political future on a resurgence of national pride. Amidst ongoing controversies and waning approval ratings, it remains unclear if the president’s message will resonate with a public yearning for change.
