Dhurandhar Becomes First Bollywood Film to Cross Rs 600 Crore Mark
Aditya Dhar's Dhurandhar makes history as the first Hindi film to surpass ₹600 crore at the Indian box office, led by Ranveer Singh.

In a landmark achievement for Indian cinema, the Bollywood film Dhurandhar has officially surpassed the Rs 600 crore nett mark at the domestic box office. Directed by Aditya Dhar, the film features a star-studded cast including Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, and Arjun Rampal. This milestone signifies a shift in the box office landscape, pushing the boundaries of what was previously thought possible for Hindi films.

The journey to this historic achievement is rooted in decades of box office milestones. The first film to cross the Rs1 crore nett mark was Kismet, released in 1943, starring Ashok Kumar. Subsequent films continued to raise the bar, with Aan (1951) being the first to reach Rs1.5 crore, and Shree 420 achieving Rs2 crore.

Mehboob Khan's Mother India (1957) became the first film to cross both the ₹3 crore and ₹4 crore nett thresholds. The iconic Mughal-e-Azam (1960), featuring Dilip Kumar and Madhubala, entered the Rs 5 crore club, while the blockbuster Sholay (1975) raised the stakes even higher, crossing Rs 10 crore and later Rs15 crore in its run.

The 1990s marked a significant evolution in box office collections, with Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994) rewriting records by reaching Rs70 crore, followed by Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001) which pushed the limits to Rs 75 crore.

The multiplex era saw new benchmarks, with Dhoom 2 (2006) reaching Rs80 crore, and Aamir Khan's Ghajini (2008) becoming the first Hindi film to surpass ₹100 crore. Aamir further elevated the standards with his films 3 Idiots, PK, and Dangal, achieving Rs200 crore, Rs300 crore, and Rs350 crore, respectively.

In the post-pandemic landscape, Shah Rukh Khan's films, including Pathaan and Jawan, set new records by surpassing Rs400 crore, Rs500 crore, and Rs550 crore. Now, Dhurandhar stands alone as the first Hindi film to hit the Rs600 crore nett milestone, marking a new chapter in the history of Bollywood box office success.

Notably, this achievement positions Dhurandhar on the path to potentially open the Rs 700 crore nett club for Bollywood. The film has garnered strong audience acclaim and continues to draw viewers.

In comparison to non-Bollywood films, the blockbuster Bahubali 2 was the first Indian film to reach the Rs 400 crore and Rs 500 crore nett thresholds in the Hindi market. More recently, Pushpa 2: The Rule further solidified its position by entering the Rs 600 crore and Rs 700 crore clubs.

As it stands, Dhurandhar's journey is a testament to the evolving dynamics of the Indian film industry. While its box office success is remarkable, the film's narrative follows covert intelligence operations amidst critical historical events, engaging audiences through its thrilling storyline.

The sequel, Dhurandhar 2, is set to release in theatres on March 19, 2026, promising a grand rollout across multiple languages, including Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam. This anticipated sequel is expected to generate significant buzz and further capitalize on the success of its predecessor.

Film critics have offered mixed reviews of Dhurandhar, yet its reception among celebrities and audiences has been overwhelmingly positive. The film's compelling performances and gripping storyline have resonated well with viewers, solidifying its place in the ranks of cinematic excellence in India.
