Derek O'Brien Challenges PM Modi to Resign if TMC Triumphs in Bengal
As voting progresses in the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Derek O'Brien has made a bold challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. O'Brien stated in a video message that Modi should step down if the TMC emerges victorious in the state.
O'Brien remarked that PM Modi has positioned himself as the face of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) throughout all 294 Assembly constituencies in West Bengal. "Stop making tall claims and accept this challenge. When Mamata Banerjee and the TMC win Bengal on May 4, have the courage to resign from the post of Prime Minister," he declared.
These comments were made during a crucial time as voting is taking place in 142 constituencies, impacting important districts in South Bengal and Kolkata. More than 3.21 crore voters are tasked with deciding the fates of 1,448 candidates during this phase.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has raised concerns about alleged voting irregularities, asserting that central security forces have intimidated TMC supporters and interfered with the electoral process. Banerjee accused these forces of detaining and harassing TMC members, questioning the integrity of the election atmosphere.
She further alleged that some observers and security personnel have acted under the influence of political entities, raising tensions as voting continues. However, the election authorities have asserted that they have established sufficient security measures to guarantee a peaceful voting process.
The BJP, aiming to broaden its influence in West Bengal, has mounted an extensive campaign, with PM Modi himself holding a series of rallies in the lead-up to the elections. The second phase, occurring now, is particularly significant as it includes numerous strongholds of the TMC, marking a critical assessment point for both the ruling party and its opposition.
Vote counting for the West Bengal Assembly elections, alongside other states, is anticipated to take place on May 4, further emphasising the importance of these ongoing elections.
