Delhi BJP Leader Urges Cleanliness Ahead of Mayoral Election
Virendra Sachdeva, the Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president, convened a meeting on Tuesday with party councillors to promote cleanliness in the city ahead of the upcoming mayoral elections scheduled for April 29, 2026. During the meeting, Sachdeva called for a concerted effort from councillors, along with their respective Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), to ensure that every street and road in Delhi is maintained in a clean state.
He emphasized the necessity of cleanliness as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) plans to address the city's three landfill sites over the next 15 months. This meeting, which took place at the BJP’s state headquarters, aimed to create a united front as the party prepares to elect the next mayor, deputy mayor, and fill three vacant seats in the standing committee.
Swati Maliwal, a newly inducted Rajya Sabha MP, was present at this particular meeting, marking her first attendance since joining the BJP. The electoral college for the upcoming mayoral election is comprised of 273 voters: 249 councillors, 14 MLAs nominated by the Delhi Assembly, seven Lok Sabha MPs, and three Rajya Sabha members from the region. To secure the position of mayor, a candidate must obtain at least 137 votes.
The BJP has nominated Pravesh Wahi, who has previously served three terms as a councillor from Rohini-East, as its candidate for mayor. In an unexpected turn, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has decided not to participate in the election, whereas the Congress party has put forward Haji Zarif as their candidate. This development suggests that Wahi may have a clear pathway to winning, particularly as the BJP currently holds a majority of 143 votes in the electoral college.
The BJP's current representation includes 123 councillors, seven Lok Sabha MPs, two Rajya Sabha members, and 11 MLAs. In contrast, the AAP commands 105 votes—comprising 100 councillors, three MLAs, and two Rajya Sabha representatives. Notably, Swati Maliwal's recent decision to leave AAP and join the BJP further strengthens the latter's position.
Within the BJP ranks, senior leaders expressed that the new mayor's priority will be to solve administrative bottlenecks and expedite civic projects across the capital city. These steps are seen as essential for enhancing the overall urban environment and addressing residents' needs as the election approaches.
