Demolition of Congress MLA Sukhpal Khaira's House Sparks Controversy
A portion of the house belonging to Congress Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Sukhpal Singh Khaira was demolished on Monday in Bholath, Kapurthala district, by the Block Development and Panchayat Officer's office. This action provoked significant backlash, particularly from Khaira, a vocal critic of the Punjab government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
Sukhpal Khaira condemned the demolition, labelling it a dangerous manifestation of "bulldozer politics". He alleged that this action is part of a broader strategy orchestrated by Mann under the influence of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal, aimed at suppressing criticism and dissent within the political landscape.
As the demolition commenced, Khaira broadcasted live on social media, voicing his objections to the government’s decision. He had preemptively gathered supporters at his residence to protest against the demolition. Khaira insisted that the area demolished was part of his legitimate ancestral home, a property that the Khaira family has occupied for over 200 years.
“The officials are mistakenly claiming the entrance gate is an encroachment. This is not the case. We are taking immediate legal action to halt this demolition,” he stated.
Khaira accused the local district administration of conducting the demolition without prior notice and failing to provide him an opportunity for a hearing. He claimed that the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) for Kapurthala supervised the demolition under the orders of Chief Minister Mann, deploying police forces in what he characterised as an illegal and politically motivated move. He affirmed that he possesses complete ownership documents and asserted that no part of his village property is illegal.
The MLA expressed his belief that these actions are part of the broader pattern of escalating political oppression. He remarked, "Punjab has become a police state," highlighting issues like alleged fake encounters and the demolition of homes related to accusations of gangsterism or drug trafficking. Khaira also claimed that he has been subjected to repeated false charges and arrests due to his outspoken stance against governmental policies.
In response to the demolition, Partap Singh Bajwa, the Leader of Opposition and a senior Congress figure, vehemently condemned the action. He stated in a post on social media, “I strongly condemn the demolition at my colleague Sukhpal Khaira’s house. Power is temporary, but accountability is permanent.” He urged Chief Minister Mann and Arvind Kejriwal to reflect on their actions, stating that such misuse of authority would not be forgotten.
Khaira plans to take the matter to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, stating his intention to ensure accountability from officials responsible for what he termed an unlawful act. He warned that the citizens of Punjab are unlikely to accept intimidation or tactics aimed at stifling democratic dissent, indicating that this matter would be pursued to its conclusion in the legal arena.
