Delhi's Severe Smog Disrupts Flights and Schooling Amid Health Alerts
Severe air pollution in Delhi results in flight cancellations, school closures, and health advisories as air quality index reaches alarming levels.

Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) have been enveloped in hazardous smog for the third consecutive day, prompting significant disruptions in daily activities. The air quality index (AQI) recorded a staggering 457 at 6 am, according to the Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi. By the evening, the AQI had slightly improved to 410, as reported by the Central Pollution Control Board’s Sameer app.

Health Emergency Declared

The persistent dense smog has raised serious health concerns, leading the Delhi state government to mandate online classes for students up to Class 5. This decision follows the implementation of Stage 4 restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan aimed at mitigating air pollution. The initiative reflects growing concerns over the health impacts of the toxic air, particularly on young children.

The AQI reached alarming levels, with some monitoring stations in the capital, including Ashok Vihar and Jahangirpuri, recording an AQI of 500 by 7 am. As the AQI scale does not extend beyond 500, actual pollution levels may have been even higher. According to the CPCB, an AQI reading of 401 and above is classified as 'severe'. In total, 26 of the 39 active monitoring stations in the region reported 'severe' or 'severe-plus' air quality on Sunday evening.

Flight Operations Impacted

The smog has severely disrupted flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport. Reports indicate that 228 flights were cancelled, including 131 departures and 97 arrivals, while more than 400 additional flights faced delays. Visibility issues also led to the diversion of at least five flights bound for Delhi.

Among those affected was Argentine football star Lionel Messi, whose arrival in Delhi for the final leg of his G.O.A.T Tour was delayed. Originally scheduled to land before 11 am, his flight from Mumbai was postponed, resulting in an arrival time of after 2 pm.

Advisory from Singapore High Commission

The hazardous air quality prompted the Singapore High Commission in India to issue advisories for its nationals living in the affected areas. The High Commission urged Singaporeans to remain indoors and wear masks when outside. Furthermore, it advised them to stay updated on announcements regarding flight operations due to low visibility conditions at the airport.

Conclusion

As Delhi grapples with this environmental crisis, officials are facing increasing pressure to implement effective solutions to combat air pollution. The situation remains critical as residents are advised to limit outdoor activities and take necessary precautions to safeguard their health.
