Delhi Police Investigate Gang-Rape and Murder of 16-Year-Old Girl
A 16-year-old girl was reportedly gang-raped and murdered by a group of four teenagers in Delhi, leading to an investigation that commenced on Sunday. According to police officials, the victim's body was discovered in a field in the Swaroop Nagar area of outer Delhi, allegedly dumped there by the accused. The investigation indicates that the crime may have occurred on Friday night but was not uncovered until Sunday when local residents found the body being attacked by dogs and other animals.
Authorities confirmed that all four individuals accused in the case are now in custody. Among them is a 19-year-old male and three minors. A police spokesperson indicated that the group was apprehended following an extensive overnight search operation. Reports suggest that one of the minors, aged 17, was known to the victim, as she had gone to meet him prior to the incident. The other three accused are acquaintances of this individual.
On Sunday morning, police received information regarding a body located near Kushak Road in Swaroop Nagar. Upon arrival, they found a highly decomposed body with the right hand missing and significant disfigurement to the face and abdomen, a situation attributed to the elements. An investigating officer stated: "Though it had been only two days, the body was decomposing very fast – likely due to how exposed it was to the elements. The face was not recognisable."
Medical examinations later confirmed that the girl had suffered multiple stab wounds, leading police to categorise the case as murder and rape, with additional charges relating to the disappearance of evidence.
The investigation process was complex, as local residents had not reported seeing the girl following Friday night. Officers reviewed footage from over 50 CCTV cameras in the vicinity, resulting in a lead related to a tempo seen near the crime scene around the suspected time. Although the vehicle's registration was initially unclear, local enquiries facilitated its identification.
The tempo was located in Khadda Colony, Swaroop Nagar, where police questioned the driver, who identified his 17-year-old brother as a frequent user of the vehicle. This led investigators to discover the presence of four young males inside the tempo at that time.
Police officials stated that three of the accused have reportedly confessed to their involvement in the crime. According to initial statements, the victim had been lured by the 17-year-old under the pretense of meeting him, where he allegedly first assaulted her before summoning his friends, who then also attacked her while reportedly under the influence of alcohol.
The police revealed that after the sexual assault, the group transported the victim to a field where she was stabbed over six times, attempting to conceal her body under foliage and mud. They then fled in the tempo. Investigators are working to confirm whether any assaults took place inside the vehicle or in the field.
Described as a school dropout who had recently moved to Swaroop Nagar, the girl was reportedly seeking employment to assist her parents and was living separately from them. Her parents were unaware of her absence for two days, which resulted in no missing-person report being filed.
Through collaboration with local residents who had previously seen her, the investigation ultimately led to her identification. Police officials have indicated that the inquiry will continue to clarify the full sequence of events, individual roles of each suspect, and the involvement of any additional persons.
The recovered evidence is set for forensic examination, and authorities have stated that appropriate legal actions will follow based on findings. The situation has raised alarming questions about safety and crime in urban India, necessitating further examination into the protective measures for vulnerable individuals, especially minors.
The local community has expressed outrage and sadness over the incident, highlighting a pressing need for societal dialogue around the safety of women and girls. As the investigation unfolds, officials are committed to bringing those culpable to justice and ensuring that such acts do not go unpunished.
