UN Delegates Walk Out During Netanyahu's Controversial Speech

Benjamin Netanyahu's address at the 81st United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York City was marked by a notable walkout from numerous delegates. This incident was reportedly instigated by the Palestinian Mission to the United Nations, which planned to speak later in the day. As Netanyahu began his speech, members of the assembly gradually left the room, leading to an atmosphere of tension.

Supporters of Netanyahu within the hall responded with applause as he described the departing delegates as 'phony human rights protesters.' He denounced their absence, saying, 'Where were you when the Iranian tyrants butchered and maimed tens of thousands of unarmed Iranian civilians?' The Israeli Prime Minister further challenged any additional representatives to leave, stating, 'If there are any other moral cowards who haven’t yet left this hall, please do so now.'

The specifics regarding which countries participated in the walkout remain largely unconfirmed. However, reports indicated that delegations from several nations, including Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Tunisia, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Algeria, Iran, Malaysia, Montenegro, and Kyrgyzstan, were absent during several moments of Netanyahu's speech. During his address, Netanyahu also took aim at the Mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, a known critic of his policies, specifically regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the West Bank. Just before Netanyahu's speech, Mayor Mamdani released a video where he was seen planting an olive tree—a gesture rich in cultural symbolism for Palestinian heritage—as well as sharing a meal with a Palestinian family.

In response to the criticism, Netanyahu remarked, 'Mr. Mamdani, you tried to stop me from coming here. You tried to silence me. Well, you can’t silence me, you can’t silence the truth. And here’s the simple truth. Israel didn’t commit genocide. Israel prevented genocide.' He concluded his speech with a denunciation of what he described as 'lies' spread about Israel and Jewish people, asserting that such narratives have 'real consequences.'
