Deepti Sharma Stars as India Defeats Pakistan by 64 Runs
In a powerful performance, India defeated Pakistan by 64 runs in their opening match of the Women’s T20 World Cup at Edgbaston. Deepti Sharma excelled with the ball, taking five wickets for just 10 runs, marking a decisive contribution to the game.
India's captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, expressed her satisfaction post-match, stating, "I am very happy. Thank you so much to all the fans who came out to support us today; we are so grateful." She highlighted the vital partnership between Smriti Mandhana and herself, which helped stabilize the innings after a challenging Powerplay. Kaur added, "Every game is important. We know that net run rate might help us towards the end of the group games."
On the batting front, Smriti Mandhana played a key role, with important contributions from the rest of the team. This initial victory gives India a positive start in the tournament, significantly bolstering their net run rate.
Conversely, Pakistan's captain, Fatima Sana, voiced her disappointment regarding her team's performance. She remarked, "We are very disappointed with the batting performance. We’ve got to improve quickly because there is still a long way to go in the tournament." Sana acknowledged the need for her players to better handle match situations, particularly emphasising the impact of dropped catches by senior players.
Deepti Sharma, awarded Player of the Match for her outstanding bowling, shared her gratitude, focusing on the team effort that led to their victory. "I mean, I am very grateful, but all credit goes to the team. The pitch was turning a bit, so varying my pace was very important. I had belief in myself to bowl a bit slower through the air and backing myself to get the ball in the right area," she noted.
As the match progressed, Sharma's impact was evident as she secured crucial wickets at pivotal moments, leading to Pakistan's collapse. The team could only manage 104 runs in reply to India’s total of 168, showcasing a glaring gap in performance on both batting and fielding fronts.
With this match concluded, both teams look towards the upcoming fixtures, with India aiming to maintain their momentum and Pakistan seeking to address their flaws quickly.
