Daily ORS Consumption: Guidelines from Health Experts
Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) is often seen as a quick solution for hydration, especially on hot summer days or after strenuous activities. Although it is effective for treating moderate dehydration due to conditions like diarrhoea or excessive sweating, medical professionals warn against its routine consumption. Dr. Niraj Kumar, a Senior Consultant in Internal Medicine at ShardaCare-HealthCity, emphasises that ORS is designed as a therapeutic treatment rather than a daily health drink.
The composition of ORS includes glucose, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and sodium citrate, all formulated to aid in rapid water absorption during severe fluid loss. While it plays a crucial role in managing dehydration, using ORS as a regular beverage is discouraged.
Dr. Kumar points out, “If a person is adequately hydrated and eating a balanced diet, drinking ORS daily generally offers no additional health benefits.” He notes that individuals who consume ORS without the need for it may invite health risks.
Health professionals advise caution particularly for certain groups. For instance, individuals with cardiovascular issues should avoid regular ORS consumption due to its sodium content, which can elevate blood pressure. Similarly, those with diabetes must be cautious as the glucose in ORS can spike blood sugar levels.
Parents are also cautioned not to replace regular fluids with ORS for young children unless they are dehydrated. Dr. Kumar reinforces that ORS should only be given to children according to medical recommendations.
Cipla Health Limited recently launched a campaign emphasising the importance of understanding the correct formulation of ORS, particularly those approved by the World Health Organisation (W.H.O.). The campaign aims to bridge the knowledge gap around proper hydration solutions, as data from the National Family Health Survey indicates a significant percentage of children with diarrhoea do not receive ORS treatment.
Shivam Puri, CEO of Cipla, addressed the growing public health challenge of dehydration due to rising temperatures. He stated that awareness and informed decision-making around ORS are critical for effective hydration.
Dr. Usha Chennuru of Cipla Health also pointed out that recognising the early signs of dehydration and understanding the role ORS can play can lead to better health outcomes. Awareness initiatives, including workshops and community engagement, aim to educate consumers on the appropriate use and benefits of ORS.
It is clear that while ORS serves a vital function in emergency hydration, regular use without medical necessity can have adverse effects. Consulting a healthcare professional before incorporating ORS into a daily routine is essential, particularly for those with underlying health conditions.
In summary, ORS is a valuable tool for rehydration during illness or extreme heat but is not recommended as an everyday drink. Health professionals advocate for the use of plain water for hydration in healthy individuals, reserving ORS for specific medical needs and circumstances.
