CUET Exam Glitches Prompt Political Outcry in India
Technical issues during the CUET exams lead to political fallout, with leaders questioning the integrity of the education system.

In recent weeks, India's Common University Entrance Test for undergraduate courses (CUET-UG) has faced significant disruption, triggering renewed political tensions. A number of students encountered technical glitches during the exams, which prompted Arvind Kejriwal, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party, to criticise Prime Minister Narendra Modi's educational qualifications once again.

Kejriwal referred to the problems surrounding CUET as evidence that the nation requires a more educated Prime Minister. This comment was made following the announcement from the National Testing Agency (NTA) regarding delays attributed to a technical glitch caused by its partner, Tata Consultancy Services. The examination for multiple shifts was affected, leading to the morning session being delayed by up to two hours. Consequently, the start time for the afternoon exams was adjusted to ensure candidates would not be adversely impacted.

"NTA sincerely regrets the inconvenience caused to students and parents," the agency stated. This incident marks the latest in a series of examination-related controversies the NTA has faced, including issues during the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and the Class 12 board exams under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

Criticism escalated when Congress's Rahul Gandhi highlighted the failure to administer exams seamlessly, stating that none of the four significant tests—NEET, CBSE, SSC, and now CUET—have been executed with integrity. Gandhi accused Prime Minister Modi of damaging India's education system, emphasising the impact on approximately one crore students affected by these failures.

In response to the disruptions experienced during the CUET, the NTA has announced that it will conduct a one-off examination for 3,765 students who were unable to finish due to technical difficulties. The NTA has assured all candidates that they will receive the full duration of the exam despite the delays.

The CUET, implemented in 2022 as part of the National Education Policy, serves as the national-level entrance examination for undergraduate programmes across various universities in India. Originally scheduled for May 28, this year's exam cycle will continue until May 31, encompassing multiple shifts.

Kejriwal's repeated assertions questioning PM Modi's qualifications drew attention again amidst these recent events. The Prime Minister has claimed a bachelor's degree from Delhi University and a master's degree from Gujarat University, details that have been publicly confirmed in the past. Nonetheless, Kejriwal has maintained that the Prime Minister should be more qualified for his prominent position, referencing how private firms often require advanced degrees for job applicants.

The implications of these ongoing controversies are significant, as they reflect broader concerns regarding the management and integrity of India's examination processes. With multiple key exams facing scrutiny, the pressure is mounting on the government and examination bodies to restore confidence among students and their families.
