Copper Prices Drop Amid White House Tariff Uncertainty
Copper stocks decline sharply as uncertainty surrounds potential tariffs from the White House, raising concerns about affordability and manufacturing costs.

Copper futures in London saw a significant drop on Thursday as reports emerged suggesting uncertainty regarding potential tariffs on refined copper by the White House. This comes amid affordability concerns that officials are weighing against encouraging domestic mining.

The Trump administration has not yet made a decision regarding the implementation of these tariffs. According to two sources familiar with the situation, officials are concerned that increasing copper prices could elevate manufacturing costs. This hesitation aligns with the administration's focus on affordability as the midterm elections approach.

As news broke, US copper prices experienced a decline of 4.6%. Several mining companies' stocks were hit hard, with Freeport-McMoRan dropping by 8%, Southern Copper falling 7%, and Teck Resources sliding 7.9%. Other companies like Ero Copper and Capstone Copper also reported losses of 8.6% and 8.2%, respectively.

Industry analysts have been monitoring how these tariff discussions could affect the trade dynamics for copper. Crittenden, an analyst, indicated that the ongoing uncertainty might close the arbitrage gap between the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and the London Metal Exchange (LME), which has previously favoured companies selling US copper. This situation also negatively impacts LME copper pricing.

Goldman Sachs' commodities specialist James McGeoch highlighted that, while China is rich in rare earth elements, the US’s copper reserves are becoming increasingly critical. He mentioned that inflation—driven primarily by energy costs rather than metal prices—also plays a role in the ongoing discussions. McGeoch noted that reliable supply chains are essential for onshoring manufacturing as costs continue to rise.

He advised that the copper market is heavily influenced by supply issues, which are reflective of challenges faced across various commodities. Observing the pricing dynamics of copper in comparison to steel, it has been noted that US steel prices are currently around 2.5 times that of Asian prices, while copper maintains a more modest premium of 10% to 15%.

Copper's significance extends to its role in electrification projects, further compounding the importance of tariff decisions. Despite the market volatility, some traders remain optimistic. They indicate that accumulated positions suggest resilience, although the market can be punishing towards those displaying uncertainty.

As of 10 a.m. Eastern Time, Goldman's US Metals basket was experiencing a downturn of nearly 3%. The reports of tariff uncertainty have spread beyond just copper, impacting the broader metals market significantly. The pulls and pushes in commodity prices highlight the complex interplay between politics, supply issues, and market sentiment.
