Controversy Erupts After Bihar CM Samrat Choudhary's Remarks on Crime
Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has sparked controversy with comments made during a speech in New Delhi. Speaking at an event regarding a memorandum of understanding between the Bihar government and the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, he stated that while crime could exist in the state, the concept of 'apraadh'—or offence—has been eradicated. His remarks have prompted criticism from opposition leaders.
Choudhary remarked, 'There is no crime here. The very concept of crime has been eliminated. There may be a crime, but there is no 'apraadh'. There are no criminals.' These remarks were part of a broader discussion about the need for water management in Bihar, which he identifies as a significant challenge for the state's recovery.
His comments went viral on social media, drawing sharp reactions from leaders of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). Tejashwi Yadav, RJD's leader of the opposition in the Bihar Assembly, expressed disbelief over Choudhary's statement. He questioned whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi had appointed Choudhary to ruin Bihar, suggesting that his record, which includes being accused in a 1990s murder case, undermines his credibility.
In a post on social media platform X, Yadav asked, 'Do the IAS and IPS officers working alongside him feel honoured or insulted?' He cited the Chief Minister's alleged involvement in past criminal activities, thereby questioning the legitimacy of Choudhary’s claims.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, who attended the event, refrained from commenting directly on the unfolding controversy but offered praise for Choudhary's focus on crime control, asserting that as Chief Minister, he must possess accurate data to support his claims.
The exchange highlights ongoing tensions in Bihar's political landscape, particularly surrounding law enforcement and governance. Leaders in the opposition are likely to continue scrutinising the current administration's approach to public safety and crime management.
Bihar's social and political environment remains dynamic, and how the situation evolves will be closely watched by analysts and citizens alike as the state approaches its future challenges.
