Colonel Sonam Wangchuk, Kargil War Hero, Passes Away at 61
Colonel Sonam Wangchuk (retd), a prominent figure in the Kargil War and recipient of the Mahavir Chakra, has passed away due to a heart attack. He was 61 years old and had been residing in Ladakh, enjoying his retirement. The Mahavir Chakra is India's second-highest military honour, awarded for extraordinary bravery in combat.
Wangchuk's significant contribution occurred on May 30, 1999, while he was then a Major in the Indian Army. He was entrusted with leading a contingent of 30 soldiers from the Ladakh Scouts to reclaim control of Chorbat La in the Batalik sector, which had been seized by the Pakistani Army. His gallantry award citation details his courage under enemy fire, stating that he executed a counter-ambush that resulted in the death of ten enemy soldiers, effectively compelling the remaining forces to vacate their positions. This operation was pivotal in securing the Line of Control in that area.
Former Indian Army Chief General V.P. Malik, who oversaw operations during the Kargil War, expressed his sorrow on social media platform X, remarking: "Very sad to learn about the passing away of Sonam Wangchuk, MVC, Kargil War hero who captured Chorbat La with his Ladakh Scouts troops. A brave leader and a thorough gentleman. Heartfelt condolences to the family. Salute to the braveheart. Om Shanti."
The 14 Corps of the Indian Army, based in Leh, also conveyed their grief on X, stating, "The General Officer Commanding and all ranks express profound grief on the untimely demise of Colonel Sonam Wangchuk, MVC (Retired), and extend heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family." They acknowledged him as a distinguished veteran whose exemplary bravery and leadership were crucial during the Kargil War.
Lt Gen Y.K. Joshi (retd), a former Northern Army Commander and also a recipient of a gallantry award during the Kargil War, shared his condolences on X, expressing his sadness over Wangchuk’s sudden demise and honouring his legacy. He noted, "Col Wangchuk, a recipient of the Maha Vir Chakra, was a true hero of the Kargil War. His dedication, bravery, and selfless service will be remembered forever. May his soul rest in peace."
Colonel Sonam Wangchuk's legacy as a leader, patriot, and committed soldier will continue to inspire current and future generations as India remembers his brave contributions during one of the nation’s most challenging military conflicts.
