Close Call: Trump’s Helicopter Nears Passenger Plane

A video depicting a military helicopter transporting United States President Donald Trump flying within a mile of a passenger aircraft has surfaced on social media. The incident occurred on Tuesday as Marine One approached Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The White House stated that the President was never in jeopardy during this occurrence.

According to a report by The New York Times, Marine One, which departed from the White House, came alarmingly close to a commercial aeroplane while flights were still operational at the airport. This was despite established safety protocols that typically pause operations in such situations. The Wall Street Journal noted that the incident, which has gained traction across social media platforms, is now under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

The NTSB has confirmed they are looking into what was described as a "loss of separation event" involving Marine One and a departing commercial aircraft from Washington National Airport, which occurred on August 4. Kush Desai, a spokesperson for the White House, affirmed to AFP that, “Marine One flights are piloted by some of the best aviators in the world, and at no point was the president in harm's way.”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) corroborated that the air traffic controller maintained contact with both the Marine One and the commercial aircraft pilots during this separation loss. The agency clarified that "the President was never in danger" and is conducting a thorough review of the incident while considering any necessary corrective actions.

Officials cited by The Wall Street Journal mentioned that the situation highlighted a failure to uphold standard separation regulations, which dictate that aircraft must remain at least 1.5 miles apart horizontally and 500 feet apart vertically during operations. Furthermore, the reports suggested that air traffic controllers did not clear nearby aircraft prior to Marine One's departure. Audio transmissions indicated that the helicopter crew attempted multiple times to notify controllers that they were three minutes away from taking off but were seemingly unheard.

This incident raises concerns regarding air safety protocols, particularly with respect to VIP flights, and underscores the importance of effective communication between pilots and air traffic control.
