CJP Supports Rahul Gandhi's Claims Against Amit Shah's Actions

The Coalition for Justice and Peace (CJP) voiced concerns on Wednesday regarding the police response during a protest on July 20 and the role of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. This follows allegations made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha, where he accused Shah of authorising excessive force against demonstrators. During a debate on an anti-paper leak bill, Gandhi asserted that the home minister "put the pellets into the blood of our students; he ordered the students of India to be shot." He further stated that it was either Amit Shah who issued the order for firing or he was completely oblivious to the violent actions taken, which would reflect incompetence in handling the situation.

Saurav Das, CJP's chief spokesperson, echoed Gandhi's statements on social media platform X, emphasising, "This raises serious concerns about the Home Minister's role in the July 20 Police Brutality case. He must be held accountable. Every life is precious. A student lost his vision for life at the Home Minister's order! Answer now." Gandhi accused Shah of not attending the Lok Sabha out of fear and demanded accountability for the use of pellet guns during the protests.

The remarks led to a significant uproar within the Lok Sabha, with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju challenging Reagan’s allegations. Rijiju requested evidence for Gandhi's claims and demanded an apology, labelling his statements as serious allegations that breach Shah's parliamentary privilege. He argued that it was misplaced to assert that ministers could issue orders for police firing, emphasising that such powers lie with magistrates and on-site officials.

In his statements outside the Parliament, Rijiju expressed the government’s discontent, noting that Rahul Gandhi had not provided any meaningful contributions to the debate about the anti-paper leak bill while making misleading accusations against the home minister. Union Minister Jitendra Singh also responded, asserting that no shots were fired during the incident, but only tear gas was used to disperse protestors. He reiterated that the authority to order such actions rests solely with the magistrate present at the scene.

This controversy over police conduct during the July 20 protest has escalated into a broader political dispute. Allegations surrounding the use of pellet guns have gained traction, supported by a police dairy entry that confirmed the use of pellets on that date, under the instructions of a deputy superintendent of the Delhi Police. This entry was recorded at 1:24 AM on July 22, presenting a crucial document amid ongoing debates regarding government accountability and police actions.

In light of these developments, the political tensions surrounding the incident are expected to continue. As various parties engage in disputes over the accusations, the call for inquiry and transparency remains pervasive within the ongoing discussions in Indian politics.
