China Condemns Dalai Lama's Grammy Award as Political Manipulation
China has expressed strong disapproval following the Dalai Lama's recent win at the Grammy Awards, labelling the award as a form of "political manipulation" against the country. The 90-year-old Buddhist spiritual leader received recognition in the audiobook category for his work, Meditations: The Reflections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. In response to the award, which he accepted with "gratitude and humility," the Dalai Lama emphasised that he views the recognition as a reflection of collective global responsibility rather than a personal accolade.
Living in exile since 1959, the Dalai Lama fled Tibet after Chinese troops violently suppressed a rebellion. China considers him a separatist and has long condemned his calls for greater autonomy for Tibet, a region it asserts is fundamentally part of its territory. Lin Jian, a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, articulated the government’s stance during a press briefing, stating, "We firmly oppose relevant parties using art awards as a tool for anti-China political manipulation, and this position is consistent and clear."
The awarding of the Grammy was attended to by musician Rufus Wainwright, who collected the honour on behalf of the Dalai Lama. The spiritual leader currently resides in Dharamshala, India, where he has continued to advocate for Tibetan rights and autonomy. This year, he also confirmed intentions to appoint a successor, a move that has further exacerbated tensions with the Chinese authorities.
Tibetan Buddhists believe that the Dalai Lama reincarnates after death, a tradition that operates under deeply rooted spiritual customs rather than political frameworks. The Dalai Lama has previously indicated that any future reincarnation will occur outside of China, which he described as an atheist, communist regime. However, Chinese officials have insisted that any succession must adhere to Chinese laws and historical precedents, including government approval.
These developments have raised alarms among Tibetan exiles, who fear that the Chinese government may attempt to intervene in the succession process in order to strengthen its control over Tibet. The region has been under Chinese governance since its occupation in 1950, and remains a contentious issue in Sino-Tibetan relations.
The Dalai Lama's win comes amidst a Grammy Awards ceremony that featured numerous political statements and highlights from other artists. The event showcased a variety of categories and performances, drawing attention both for its artistic commendations and the political climate surrounding contemporary issues.
