Childhood Fatty Liver Disease Emerges as Health Concern in Chandigarh
Chandigarh experts warn of rising fatty liver disease cases in children, stressing prevention through healthy lifestyles.

Fatty liver disease in children is becoming a pressing public health issue, according to Dr Sadhna Lal, the head of paediatric gastroenterology and hepatology at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh. During an awareness programme held to commemorate Global Fatty Liver Day, Dr Lal highlighted the alarming prevalence of this condition, particularly in urban areas.

Dr Lal pointed out that nearly one in four obese children may be affected by fatty liver disease, which often goes unnoticed in its early stages. She noted that this condition can serve as a precursor to serious metabolic and cardiovascular problems in later life.

The event hosted by the paediatric gastroenterology division of PGIMER aimed to raise awareness about Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD). Experts discussed the heightened burden of this disease among children and adolescents, urging a focus on preventative measures and healthy lifestyle choices.

Dr Sadhna Lal stressed that fatty liver disease is increasingly prevalent among children, especially those leading sedentary lifestyles and consuming unhealthy diets. She explained that the shift in terminology from fatty liver disease to MAFLD better reflects the underlying metabolic issues associated with the condition. The warning was clear: if left untreated, fatty liver disease during childhood could lead to serious health complications, such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease in adulthood.

Emphasising the importance of prevention, Dr Lal stated, "Prevention begins in childhood. Healthy eating habits, regular physical activity and limiting processed foods can prevent and even reverse many cases. Parents play a pivotal role in shaping these habits and creating a healthy environment for their children."

Furthermore, she highlighted the need for early screening and awareness, noting, "Awareness and early screening are crucial because fatty liver disease often goes unnoticed until complications develop. Our objective is to empower families and young people with the knowledge needed to protect children from lifelong health consequences and ensure healthier futures."
