Chennai Super Kings Target Sanju Samson in Potential Trade Deal
As the deadline for player retention in the Indian Premier League (IPL) approaches, discussions surrounding Sanju Samson are intensifying. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK), five-time IPL champions, are reportedly eager to secure the wicketkeeper-batter from the Rajasthan Royals. According to a report from ESPNcricinfo, negotiations are advanced, but CSK may need to part with two significant players to facilitate the transfer.
CSK is expected to offer all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to the Royals in a bid to acquire Samson. Both franchises have engaged with the players involved, and expressions of interest have been submitted to the IPL governing council regarding the potential move.
Under the IPL's trading rules, formal discussions can only proceed once written consent is obtained from the players. Both Sanju Samson and Ravindra Jadeja have long tenures with their respective franchises, making this potential trade particularly notable.
Samson has represented the Rajasthan Royals for eleven seasons, showcasing his skills as a talented batter and wicketkeeper. In contrast, Ravindra Jadeja has been with CSK since 2012, with the exception of the 2016 and 2017 seasons when the team faced suspension. Interestingly, Jadeja began his IPL career with the Royals as a 19-year-old, marking the start of a successful journey in the league.
The discussions come on the heels of Samson's indication to the Royals' management of his desire to explore a change after the conclusion of IPL 2025. This move has been anticipated within cricketing circles and has sparked considerable interest among fans and analysts alike.
In terms of team dynamics, Jadeja was retained by CSK prior to the IPL 2025 mega auction for INR 18 crore, making him one of the franchise's key players alongside captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. Jadeja has played a pivotal role in CSK's success, contributing to three of the team’s five championship victories.
His experience is further highlighted by his participation in 254 IPL matches, ranking him fifth in the tournament's history, trailing behind notable players such as MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. In 2022, Jadeja briefly captained CSK, taking over from MS Dhoni, but following a challenging start to the season, the captaincy was returned to Dhoni.
Sam Curran, who began his IPL career with the Punjab Kings in 2019, became the league’s most expensive player in 2023 at INR 18.50 crore. After stints with CSK in 2020 and 2021, he was re-signed for INR 2.40 crore ahead of the 2025 season. However, his performance in the recent season saw him score 114 runs and take just one wicket in five matches.
The potential acquisition of Sanju Samson by CSK, coupled with the departure of experienced players like Jadeja and Curran, could significantly reshape the team’s strategy and dynamics in the upcoming seasons of the IPL.
