Challenges Faced by MCD Students in Transition to Online Learning
Students in Delhi face difficulties with online classes due to inadequate resources, particularly among those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

NEW DELHI: The transition to online classes for students from Nursery to Class 5 in Delhi and the National Capital Region has revealed significant challenges, particularly for those attending schools run by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). This shift was prompted by rising pollution levels, but many students lack the necessary infrastructure to participate effectively in remote learning.

The Directorate of Education issued a directive stating, "It has been decided that classes in physical mode for students of Nursery to Class 5 are discontinued until further notice for all government, government-aided, and unaided private recognised schools in Delhi." This decision has raised concerns among educators about the impact on young learners, many of whom come from low-income families.

Ashok Kumar, Principal at MCD Pratibha Vidyalaya Marginal Bandh Old 2 in Seelampur, reported that only about 25% of his students are able to engage in online classes. "We send out Zoom or Google Meet links for students to join, but the participation rate remains low," he explained.

Dalbir Singh, a teacher from MCD Primary School in RK Puram Sector 4, echoed these sentiments, noting that only 20% of his students manage to attend online sessions. He attributed this low turnout to the economic circumstances of the families involved. "Even if they have a smartphone at home, often the father takes it to work, making it difficult for the children to access their classes," he added.

In addition to the lack of devices, educators have pointed out the absence of parental supervision as a significant barrier to effective learning. "It is not feasible to leave such young children alone with phones without adult supervision," Kumar remarked, highlighting the complexities of remote education in these circumstances.

The situation underscores the broader issue of educational inequality, particularly during a time when access to digital resources is crucial for continued learning. As schools adapt to the challenges posed by pollution and the need for remote learning, the struggle for MCD students serves as a stark reminder of the disparities that exist within the education system in Delhi.
