Carlos Alcaraz Withdraws from Wimbledon 2026 Due to Injury
Two-time Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz will miss the tournament due to a wrist injury, impacting his ranking and tournament aspirations.

Carlos Alcaraz, the world number two and two-time Wimbledon champion, has announced his withdrawal from this year's Wimbledon tournament due to a wrist injury. The 23-year-old Spaniard initially sustained the injury to his right wrist during the first round of the Barcelona Open and subsequently opted to pull out of the French Open, where he was a two-time defending champion, in order to focus on recovery.

In a statement posted on Instagram, Alcaraz expressed his disappointment, saying, "My recovery is going well and I'm feeling much better, but unfortunately I'm still not ready to compete, which is why I have to withdraw from the grass-court swing at Queen's and Wimbledon. They are two truly special tournaments for me and I will miss them a lot. We'll keep working to come back as soon as possible."

Last year, Alcaraz reached the Wimbledon final but was defeated by his rival Jannik Sinner. The Spaniard began 2026 on a high note, winning his first Australian Open title and becoming the youngest male player to achieve a career Grand Slam. However, missing the grass court season will hinder his momentum, especially as he was scheduled to compete at Queen's, where he is also a two-time winner.

Jannik Sinner capitalised on Alcaraz's absence, recently overtaking him to become the world number one after a string of victories, including three Masters 1,000 titles in just five weeks. The last nine men's major singles titles have been shared between these two players, with Alcaraz winning five of them. Alcaraz’s withdrawal not only opens up the tournament draw for other competitors but also enhances Sinner's chances of claiming the Wimbledon title this year.

Wrist injuries can be particularly problematic for tennis players, requiring careful management to prevent long-term damage. Alcaraz previously stated his reluctance to push himself prematurely, highlighting that his focus is on a long-term career in sports. He noted, "Forcing things at this Roland Garros could really harm me for future tournaments."

This announcement comes as a disappointment, particularly given the exciting rivalry showcased last year between Alcaraz and Sinner. With Alcaraz out of play, Sinner has the opportunity to significantly extend his lead in the rankings and diminish Alcaraz's 7-4 lead in Grand Slam titles won. Meanwhile, it allows other top-ranked players like Daniil Medvedev and Novak Djokovic to gain ground as contenders for the title.

Djokovic, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, turns 39 on Friday and also has a history of injuries, making him a formidable opponent should he remain fit for competition.

As the tennis world prepares for Wimbledon, which is set to commence on 29 June, fans will monitor other emerging talents as they compete for the prestigious title in the absence of both Alcaraz and Sinner at the upcoming grass court events.
