BSE Market Capitalisation Reaches $5 Trillion Amid Investor Gains
The market capitalisation of companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) has surpassed the $5 trillion mark, reflecting a substantial increase in investor wealth. As of this week, investor assets have risen by ₹22.78 lakh crore, largely driven by a rally in equity benchmarks that has continued for four consecutive sessions.
The BSE's primary index, the Sensex, rose by 347.14 points, or 0.45%, closing at 77,155.62. Similarly, the National Stock Exchange’s (NSE) Nifty index gained 96.55 points, or 0.40%, ending at 24,085.70. Over the past four trading days, the Sensex has climbed 3,323.07 points, representing a 4.50% increase, while the Nifty has jumped 924.1 points, equating to a 3.98% rise.
The surge in market cap, now at ₹4,75,12,374.27 crore (approximately $5.03 trillion), has been attributed to declining crude oil prices following a peace agreement between the United States and Iran. Siddhartha Khemka, Head of Research at Wealth Management, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd, commented on the situation, stating, “The sharp decline in crude oil prices has improved sentiment, reducing concerns around inflation and external sector pressures.”
Positive investor sentiment has particularly favoured oil marketing companies and has had a favourable impact on inflation and fuel costs, benefiting India's current account balance as well. Among the 30 firms listed on the Sensex, notable gains were recorded in companies like Trent, which surged by 7.06%, and others such as Bharat Electronics, Tata Steel, and Infosys.
Conversely, firms such as Bajaj Finserv and Axis Bank experienced losses during this trading period. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, is currently priced at around $79.10 per barrel, with market analysts observing that easing geopolitical tensions around the Strait of Hormuz are playing a significant role in sustaining the optimism among investors.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments Limited, remarked, “Continued weakness in crude oil prices, driven by easing geopolitical tensions, has kept investor sentiment buoyant.” Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, added further context, stating, “The easing of geopolitical tensions has helped unwind the risk premium that weighed on markets during the conflict, providing a favourable backdrop for equities.”
The performance of the Indian stock market comes amidst varied outcomes in other global markets, with Asian indices generally trending upwards while U.S. markets showed mixed results. Looking ahead, investors are hopeful that maintaining lower crude prices will continue to enhance market conditions in the long term.
