Blinkit Food Licence Suspended Due to Health Violations in Mumbai

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food licence of Blink Commerce Pvt Ltd, which operates the quick commerce brand Blinkit. This action follows a recent inspection of the company's facility located in Malad (West), where food safety officers discovered numerous health violations. Among the issues identified were significant cockroach infestations, improperly stored food items, and products that were either expired or tampered with.

The inspection revealed that food items were carelessly stacked on rusted racks. Areas designated for cold storage lacked basic cleanliness, showing evidence of expired or spoiled packaged foods. Despite requests for a comment, Blinkit did not respond to enquiries from the Hindustan Times regarding the FDA's decision.

In a separate but related instance, the Bombay High Court has directed Amazon Retail India to dispose of expired and perished goods from its warehouse in Bhiwandi, Thane district. This ruling comes after the Maharashtra FDA took action against the Amazon facility for allegedly distributing expired products instead of properly disposing of them.

The court order, issued on Monday, also instructed Amazon to prepare an inventory of all expired items and hand them over to an FDA officer for legal disposal. The High Court emphasized that Amazon must cover the costs associated with this process. This decision occurred shortly after the court had reprimanded the Maharashtra FDA for its earlier actions against Amazon's warehouse.

The emphasis placed by the Maharashtra FDA reflects a broader commitment to ensuring food safety standards are upheld. Recently, the agency announced plans to conduct inspections of roadside food stalls, prioritising hygiene and overall food quality.

This series of events indicates increasing scrutiny on food delivery services and warehouses in Mumbai, with regulatory bodies intensifying efforts to address public health concerns regarding food safety.
