Blast Review: Action Thriller Fails to Deliver on Promises
Blast Review: Action Thriller Fails to Deliver on Promises
The new film 'Blast' struggles with predictability despite strong performances and ambitious concepts, according to recent reviews.

The film 'Blast', released on 28 May 2026, presents a narrative centered around a middle-class family of martial artists confronted with sinister corporate interests. Directed by Subash K Raj, this action-oriented thriller is marked by themes of protection, resilience, and empowerment. With a runtime nearing two hours and thirty minutes, the film merges multiple genres, showcasing a family's fight to maintain their peaceful existence.

The story introduces viewers to Nila, portrayed by Preity Mukundhan, whose father, played by Arjun Sarja, instills important life lessons that include standing up for the oppressed. Nila grows up trained in karate, making her a compelling character who champions the idea of personal agency and freedom. Her journey and martial arts prowess become essential as they navigate the challenges posed by a corporate antagonist and an assassin hired to ensure his interests are protected.

However, as the plot unfolds, 'Blast' veers into well-trodden territory typical of commercial cinema, introducing clichéd elements such as inept law enforcement and one-dimensional villains. The narrative's predictability is underscored by familiar tropes reminiscent of films like 'Drishyam' and 'Kolamaavu Kokila'.

Nila's mother, played by Abhirami, serves as a classic representation of a dedicated homemaker who, despite her supportive role, is hinted to have her own combat skills—a revelation signalled in the film’s promotional materials. This predictability detracts from the potential depth of the characters, particularly those in antagonistic roles, such as the corporate villain Varun Dayal, portrayed by John Kokken, and the assassin Abraham, played by Arjun Chidambaram.

Critics have noted that while the core cast, especially Preity Mukundhan, Abhirami, and Arjun Sarja, offer convincing performances, the script's predictable trajectory undermines their character development. Supporting characters, including Vivek Prasanna, add some value, but ultimately do little to elevate the film beyond mediocrity. The disjointed aspirations of being an engaging thriller clash with a runtime that feels excessive, marking 'Blast' as a missed opportunity in crafting a more original story.

Despite the potential for an enthralling dark comedy, the execution results in a film that reveals too much too soon, leading to an overstayed welcome that leaves viewers anticipating a more satisfying conclusion as the credits roll.
