US Treasury Warns Oman of Sanctions Over Hormuz Strait Tolls
The United States has issued a stern warning to Oman regarding its potential involvement with Iran in establishing a toll system in the Strait of Hormuz. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated on Thursday that Washington would 'aggressively target' any entities facilitating such tolls. This threat escalates tensions between the US and its Gulf ally, Oman, known for its neutrality in the region.
Bessent emphasised that the US will not tolerate attempts by Iran or Oman to impose fees on commercial shipping in this vital maritime route. He wrote on social media, 'Oman, in particular, should know that the US Treasury will aggressively target any actors involved—directly or indirectly—in facilitating tolls for the Strait, and any willing partners will be penalised.'
The heightened rhetoric from the US follows remarks from President Donald Trump, who hinted at military actions against Oman, stating, 'Nobody is going to control it. It’s international waters, and Oman will behave just like everybody else, or we will have to blow them up.' This comes as Iran has asserted sovereignty over the strait, which is instrumental for global oil supplies.
The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial passage for global energy transport, with approximately 20% of the world’s oil flowing through it. The ongoing conflict between the US and Iran has seen increased military activity, prompting fears of instability in the region. Iran has previously suggested a joint Iranian-Omani management of the strait, although Oman has not formally stated any interest in such control.
In contrast, Ali Bagheri Kani, deputy secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, expressed that Iran would not permit the Hormuz Strait to become a hotspot for insecurity. He highlighted that nations using this strategic passage against Iran's security would need to be held accountable. 'We seek to establish a just order that negates hegemony and domination and reinforces trust and cooperation in the region,' Bagheri Kani remarked, as reported by Iran's public television.
The escalating rhetoric from the US against Oman is significant and unusual given the historically close relations between the two. Oman has often served as a mediator in regional conflicts, including those involving the US and Iran. The current situation raises questions about the future of US-Oman relations amid ongoing negotiations between the US and Iran aimed at stabilising the region and settling outstanding conflicts. A resolution surrounding the control of the Strait of Hormuz remains a pivotal issue in these talks, influencing broader geopolitical dynamics in the Gulf region.
