Bihar Minister's Remarks on Jamui Harassment Case Stir Controversy

The recent harassment incident involving two minors in Jamui, Bihar has drawn significant political attention, following the circulation of a graphic video of the event. On Saturday evening, the girl, aged 15, and her male friend were reportedly assaulted by a group of individuals. The video showcased the distressing encounter, prompting widespread outrage when it emerged on social media.

Umesh Kushwaha, the state president of the Janata Dal (United) or JD(U), described the incident as an "isolated" occurrence while asserting that societal conditions were far worse prior to 2005, when the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) came to power. His remarks have elicited sharp criticism from opposition leaders.

Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, a key figure in the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), responded to Kushwaha's comments, labelling the situation as a disgrace for the state. "It is truly unfortunate that they term the attack on a girl and boy as isolated. Had this happened to any leader's family member, would they still say the same?" Yadav stated, emphasising the need for accountability.

The incident reportedly took place as the two minors returned from a coaching class. The viral video depicts troubling scenes where the male teen is seen defending the girl as she is harassed by members of the group. Eyewitness accounts confirm that the minors were ambushed by multiple individuals who challenged them and made physical assaults.

Following the public outcry, law enforcement officials acted swiftly. Deputy Inspector General of Police Rakesh Kumar confirmed that three minors were apprehended in connection with the assault hours after the video's release. Reports indicate that the minors involved in the harassment are also local residents.

Jamui Superintendent of Police Vishwajit Dayal mentioned that a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed, highlighting various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including provisions aimed at protecting children. The FIR initially was against unidentified individuals, but soon after, the three suspects were taken into custody.

Yadav reiterated the harsh realities faced by women in Bihar, saying, "No place is safe for girls in the state. Criminal activities are rampant and the authorities are failing to act."

BJP spokesperson Kuntal Krishna stated, "No one who disrespects women will go unpunished, and law enforcement will act decisively to deter such incidents.", reinforcing a government commitment to addressing crime against women.
