Ben Shelton Aims for Historic US Open Title Against Zverev

Ben Shelton is set to compete in the US Open final against Alexander Zverev, marking a significant moment in his burgeoning tennis career. If victorious, Shelton would become the first Black American man to win the singles title at Flushing Meadows since Arthur Ashe in 1968. This achievement would also make him the first Black man to claim any grand slam singles title since Yannick Noah won at the French Open in 1983.

As Shelton savoured his moment of triumph after reaching the grand slam final, he expressed heartfelt appreciation for his grandmother, Regina, who passed away earlier this year. "Without her, there’s no Ben Shelton standing here today. So this one is for her,” he stated.

The American's pathway to history will not be straightforward, however. Shelton faces a tough opponent in Zverev, the reigning champion of the French Open and the tournament's top seed. Historically, Shelton has struggled against Zverev, losing all five of their previous encounters on various surfaces. He has yet to win a set against him since their initial match in Cincinnati in 2024.

Zverev is particularly adept at countering left-handed players, leveraging his powerful two-handed backhand. This ability poses a substantial challenge for Shelton, who has not managed to overcome Zverev in their past meetings.

Despite the odds, Shelton remains optimistic. He points out that he has never faced Zverev in a grand slam final, a setting in which he often elevates his performance. “Problem-solving has been the name of the game here,” Shelton remarked, reflecting on his past challenges against players like Stefanos Tsitsipas and Carlos Alcaraz.

His father and coach, Bryan Shelton, emphasised his son's impressive 7-2 record in finals, suggesting that Shelton thrives under pressure. “He feels like he’s going to play his best tennis at the end of the week,” Bryan noted.

Shelton's rise in the sport has been characterised by substantial improvement. After starting as a college player, he has evolved from a raw talent into a formidable competitor. His performances in recent months illustrate how his hard work has refined his skills, particularly in his backhand and serve.

Reflecting on his transformation, Shelton said, “I’ve made improvements and changes in some of the most important categories to be able to compete at the top.” His consistent baseline play and improved return serve have been critical as he progresses in this tournament.

As he prepares for the final, Shelton’s excitement is palpable, a sentiment echoed by his father, who expressed immense pride in his son’s accomplishments and the significance of this moment at the US Open.
