Bangladesh Reports New Measles Death and Rising Cases
Another child dies in Bangladesh as measles cases surge, with total infections reaching over 10,000 since March.

A child has succumbed to measles in Bangladesh within the last 24 hours, as the country's health authorities report a significant increase in cases. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) released a bulletin indicating that 126 new cases were logged, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 10,185 since March 15.

The DGHS noted that a total of 92 individuals have died from confirmed measles infections in this period, alongside an additional 551 fatalities associated with symptoms of the highly contagious disease. The report highlighted that out of the total deaths, 232 occurred in the Dhaka Division, while 86 were recorded in the Rajshahi Division.

In the past day, hospitals have reported 1,027 individuals seeking treatment for measles symptoms, with 878 admitted. Dhaka experienced the highest number of hospital admissions, with 309 reported, whereas Rangpur registered the fewest admissions at just 16.

The rapid spread of measles has prompted significant concern among health officials, as the overall number of suspected cases in the country has now reached 84,266. The DGHS continues to monitor the situation closely and urges the public to remain vigilant against the disease.

With measles being highly infectious, health authorities are emphasising the need for vaccinations and public health awareness campaigns to curb the outbreak. Families are encouraged to seek medical advice if they observe symptoms of measles, which can include high fever, cough, runny nose, and rashes.

As the situation develops, health officials remain focused on mitigating the risks associated with this alarming increase in cases.
