Bangladesh Holds National Parliament Election with 127 Million Voters
Voting commenced across Bangladesh on Thursday morning for the national parliament election, marking a significant event for the country. More than 127 million registered voters are anticipated to participate in the electoral process. Polling began at 7:30 a.m. local time and is scheduled to conclude at 4:30 p.m. local time.
Voters were seen forming long queues outside various polling stations in Dhaka on the evening prior to the election. A first-time voter, Miraz Ahmed, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "This is my first time voting, and I'm really excited." He added that he was collecting his voter number from a help desk to ensure a smooth voting experience the next morning.
According to the Election Commission, there are 2,028 candidates vying for 299 out of the 300 parliamentary seats that are directly elected. The remaining seat will be contested later due to the death of a candidate. A political party must secure 151 seats to form a government.
This election represents Bangladesh's first general election since Sheikh Hasina's resignation as prime minister in August 2024, following a period of political unrest. Election officials have indicated that the counting of votes will occur immediately at the polling places after voting concludes.
As citizens engage in this democratic process, there is a palpable sense of anticipation across the nation regarding the political direction Bangladesh will take following the results of the election.
