Bangladesh Condemns Sheikh Hasina's Media Appearance in Delhi

The Bangladeshi government expressed its outrage following a virtual press conference held by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in New Delhi. Officials in Dhaka accused India of permitting an 'absconding convicted mass murderer' to use its territory to denounce the Bangladeshi state and its citizens. During the press event, Hasina praised India for its historical support during Bangladesh’s independence struggle in 1971 but the sentiment was not reciprocated by the current administration.

Hours later, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led government issued a stern statement asserting that Bangladesh would not be a 'client state', advocating for a bilateral relationship grounded in 'sovereign equality and mutual respect'. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs voiced its concern that India's decision to facilitate Hasina's media engagement seriously undermined efforts to cultivate harmonious diplomatic relations.

Hasina, who has been residing in India since August 2024, indicated during the interaction that she intended to return home by December 2026, despite a death sentence imposed on her over allegations of crimes against humanity linked to a crackdown on protests in July 2024. Her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, who joined the conference from the United States, cautioned that Bangladesh risked becoming 'another Pakistan' amidst rising extremist sentiments since his mother’s government was ousted.

Dhaka's reactions were swift, labelling Hasina’s remarks from Indian soil as a significant violation of Bangladesh’s sovereignty and a severe insult to the martyrs of the anti-government movement from 2024. The government reiterated its commitment to establishing a positive and mutually beneficial relationship with India, emphasising the importance of non-interference and respect for national dignity.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also expressed disappointment over India’s lack of response to previous requests for Hasina’s extradition, as outlined in a bilateral treaty signed in 2013. They articulated that the permission granted to Hasina for a media interaction was acutely hurtful to the sentiments of the Bangladeshi populace.

New Delhi, for its part, has maintained that its decision to host the former prime minister aligns with its tradition of offering refuge during crises and clarified that it had not provided her with a political platform. However, Indian officials reiterated that they would remain unengaged with the narratives presented by Hasina during her address.

As diplomatic tensions rise, the encounter raises questions about the future trajectory of Bangladesh-India relations, with both nations now at a pivotal juncture. The Indian government has emphasised that the interaction was organised by a private entity and that they did not endorse any viewpoints expressed during the event.

The evolving situation indicates a complex interplay of international diplomacy, human rights concerns, and national security issues as Bangladesh navigates its post-political crisis landscape.
