Australia secures a 2-0 victory over Turkiye in their World Cup 2026 group match, marking an impressive start to the tournament.

In an exciting opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026, Australia triumphed over Turkiye with a score of 2-0 in Vancouver, British Columbia. The game took place on June 13, 2026, and Australia marked the occasion with two impressive goals.

Nestory Irankunda made a significant impact early in the match, scoring the first goal in the 27th minute. The young winger latched onto a long ball from midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler and managed to beat the Turkish defence before delivering a low finish into the net. Irankunda celebrated with a nod to Australian football history by mimicking former captain Tim Cahill’s signature goal celebration.

Connor Metcalfe extended Australia's lead in the second half, scoring in the 75th minute from around 25 yards out. This goal assured Australia of their victory, as they maintained a strong defensive performance against Turkiye.

Australia's goalkeeper, Patrick Beach, was a standout player, making eight crucial saves throughout the match. This performance proved invaluable, particularly as Turkiye had numerous attempts on goal, including one threatened by Arda Güler, which was narrowly deflected onto the post by Beach.

Australia's coach, Tony Popovic, surprised many by opting to start Beach in goal instead of the experienced Maty Ryan and included ten players making their World Cup debuts. Popovic's decisions appeared to pay off, with Beach producing an impressive display that denied Turkiye’s efforts to equalise.

Turkiye returned to the World Cup for the first time in 24 years, having last participated in the 2002 tournament when they finished in third place. Despite their dominance in possession and territory, they struggled to convert chances into goals against a well-organised Australian side.

Earlier in the day, Brazil played to a draw against Morocco, which saw Ismail Saibari score Morocco's first goal. Furthermore, Scotland secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Haiti, placing them at the top of Group C.

Following this match, Australia now looks ahead, seeking to advance through the group stages alongside the United States and Paraguay, both of whom are also in Group D.
