Assam Foundation Stone Laid for Adani Power’s 3,200 MW Project

The Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, inaugurated the foundation stone for Adani Power Limited’s new 3,200 MW Ultra-Supercritical Thermal Power Plant on 20 September 2026, located in Chapar, Dhubri district. This ambitious ₹48,000-crore initiative is expected to generate approximately 20,000 job opportunities during its construction phase and around 5,000 once operational. The project aims to enhance Assam’s overall power production capacity.

The formal ceremony was graced by senior state officials, industry leaders, community representatives, and Mr. Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Group. The Chapar facility will be part of a larger power investment estimated to reach ₹63,000 crore in Assam, with phases expected to launch by December 2030. Overall investment in the state is projected to exceed ₹80,000 crore, with numerous projects transitioning from planning to execution, potentially creating substantial job opportunities and infrastructure developments within the next three to four years.

The thermal power project is anticipated to benefit local contractors, suppliers, transport firms, and service providers by integrating them into the growing vendor ecosystem associated with the Adani Group in Assam.

Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma remarked, "Assam is fast emerging as the region’s energy hub, with several mega energy projects in the pipeline. The 3,200 MW Chapar project is a proud outcome of the confidence generated by the Advantage Assam Investor Summit 2.0. With an investment of nearly ₹48,000 crore, this project will constitute one of the largest single investments made in Assam. Besides providing massive employment opportunities, the state will also benefit through increased economic activity and SGST revenues, enabling local industries to participate in the emerging ecosystem."

Mr. Jeet Adani further stated, "Today marks the beginning of an important new chapter for Assam. Adani Power will invest ₹48,000 crore in this thermal plant, bringing reliable and affordable electricity to support homes, businesses, and industries. The project will also create jobs and open up opportunities for local contractors, suppliers, and businesses. We are proud to invest in Assam and be part of the state’s economic growth."

The plant will consist of four units, each with a capacity of 800 MW, and will employ ultra-supercritical technology characterised by high efficiency and modern environmental safety standards. Upon completion, it aims to deliver dependable and cost-effective electricity to meet the household, commercial, and industrial demands of Assam, thereby reinforcing the state's energy framework.

The broader power investment includes about ₹15,000 crore allocated for two Pumped Storage Plants (PSPs) with a cumulative capacity of 2,700 MW, under the auspices of Adani Green Energy Limited. Additionally, Adani Energy Solutions Limited is involved in implementing smart metering projects to modernise the electricity distribution infrastructure within Assam.

The Adani Group has also earmarked investments in aviation and cement sectors in Assam, notably with the operational launch of Terminal 2 at Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport (LGBIA) in Guwahati on 22 February 2026, bolstering the state’s connectivity and industrial capabilities.

The Adani Foundation, the social welfare counterpart of the Adani Group, has extended aid to over 8,000 flood-affected families in Assam’s Sivasagar and Dhemaji districts, providing essentials such as food, medicines, and hygiene supplies. The foundation's initiatives encompass 19 villages within the vicinity of Guwahati, aimed at advancing education, healthcare, livelihood opportunities, community infrastructure, and climate action initiatives.

Adani Power emerged as the successful bidder for the 3,200 MW thermal plant in October 2025, subsequently receiving the Letter of Award from the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited in November 2025. Adani Power is recognised as India's largest private thermal power producer, with an installed capacity of 18,290 MW across multiple states, thus playing a pivotal role in India's transition to a power-surplus nation.
