Asian Games 2026: India Competes for Medals in Multiple Sports

The Asian Games 2026 are currently underway, with Indian athletes making significant strides in various events. One of the highlights is Quimcy Dsouza, who faced off against Japan’s Sakamoto Yuina in the women’s singles bronze-medal match. After a challenging first set where Dsouza initially trailed 7-9, she made a commendable comeback to lead 11-10, only to ultimately lose the set 11-13. The match format allows for a best-of-three sets to determine the winner, heightening the anticipation for her performance.

Indian fans have taken a keen interest in teqball, a sport gaining popularity in India. Following Dsouza's match, attention turned to the women’s 10m air rifle competition, where Elavenil Valarivan, Sonam Uttam Maskar, and Vidarsa K. Vinod are all vying for a place in the finals. With only eight qualifying spots available from a pool of 60 shooters, the pressure is mounting for the Indian contingent.

Earlier in the day, Suraj Singh Mayanglambam showcased his skills in the men’s Changquan final, a wushu discipline known for its blend of acrobatic movements and striking techniques. Suraj Singh's score of 9.683 placed him in the 10th position after his performance assessment across three categories, accompanied by a perfect score for Quality of Movement.

In other events, the Indian women’s badminton team is set to face Kazakhstan, while the women's cricket team is in a semifinal clash against Bangladesh. The Indian women's hockey team is also set to commence their campaign against Uzbekistan, while their male counterparts will face Indonesia.

Additional events include traditional martial arts competitions. Suchika Tariyal is competing in the women’s traditional 60kg quarterfinals, while Varun Sanyal is scheduled to participate in the men’s traditional 77kg quarterfinals later in the day.

India's journey in the Asian Games is punctuated by their historical success in various sports, with a previous tally of 10 medals in wushu to build upon. The nation looks to improve upon this as they compete across a broad spectrum of disciplines today, keenly anticipating more medals to enhance their standings in the overall medal tally.
